Diving for history: A Black genealogist's search for slave ship wrecks on Florida's ocean floor

With a measuring tape and waterproof notepad in hand, Shellie Baxter swims around a shipwreck embedded into the ocean’s floor in the Florida Keys. The water is warmer than the San Diego shores she’s used to, but this is still her most challenging dive yet – she is learning how to document slave shipwrecks.

As a genealogist, Baxter has helped over 150 people trace their ancestral roots through her organization Our Genetic Legacy, a non-profit committed to uncovering the hidden histories Black and Indigenous people.

“Our end goal here is to do archeological research underwater to help find sunken slave ships and document them.” Baxter said, looking at the ocean.

Five years later, the wound of 11 July in Cuba remains open

On 11 July 2021, thousands of people in Cuba took to the streets to demand freedom, electricity, human rights, and a dignified life. The State responded with brutal repression against activists and protesters.

Many faced arbitrary detention, threats, forced exile, trials without due process, and disproportionate sentences. Their families have also borne the absence of their loved ones, fear, and persecution for demanding justice.

Five years later, 11 July remains an unresolved debt for the Cuban State.

According to Justicia 11J, there are at least 823 people deprived of liberty for political reasons in Cuba. Meanwhile, the crisis that led many people to protest five years ago has only deepened. Today, the population faces prolonged daily power outages, since October 2024, the entire country has experienced eight total collapses of the National Electric System as well as food shortages and the constant deterioration of basic services. In response, so far in 2026, 614 spontaneous public protests have been recorded, and they continue to be met with heavy repression.

Live! Mali vs Zambia at the AFCON 2025 on beIN SPORTS

Mali and Zambia will face off at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2025 for just the second time in tournament history when they open their Group A campaign on Monday at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca.

This highly anticipated AFCON 2025 matchup revives a rivalry that has lain dormant on the continental stage for more than three decades.

The only prior AFCON finals meeting between Mali and Zambia came in the 1994 semi-finals, played on 6 April 1994 in Tunis. On that occasion, Zambia delivered a dominant 4–0 victory, with goals from Elihah Litana, Zeddy Saileti, Kalusha Bwalya, and Kenneth Malitoli.

That defeat remains Mali’s joint-heaviest loss in AFCON history, alongside their 4–0 loss to Morocco in 2004. For Zambia, the result still stands as one of their biggest wins at the AFCON finals.
