Australia faces an uphill battle to recruit and train enough naval personnel to serve on submarines planned for the future fleet of nuclear-powered vessels under the controversial $368bn Aukus deal, a retired admiral has warned.

As the Virginia-class submarine USS Colorado arrived at HMAS Stirling south of Perth on Tuesday for a month of routine maintenance and to help build Australian expertise, retired admiral Peter Briggs said more people needed to be enrolled in the navyâs submarine program.

A US nuclear-powered submarine with 160 crew, including seven Australians, has docked south of Perth for maintenance ahead of becoming the first vessel to begin regular AUKUS rotations next year.

The USS Colorado arrived on Tuesday at HMAS Stirling all the way from Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, as Australian workers, including 15 WA businesses, prepare to carry out maintenance on the Virginia-class submarine.

It’s the fourth maintenance period involving US or UK nuclear-powered submarines at HMAS Stirling in the last two years, with WA set to host regular visits from late 2027 under the AUKUS pact.

As the nuclear-powered USS Colorado approached Fremantle Harbour on Tuesday after an 11,000-kilometre journey from Hawaii, a pod of dolphins was waiting to welcome its 120 crew.

“We got a dolphin welcome show,” said Commanding Officer Justin Reeves “Now the leading desire is to get out to Rottnest Island.”

Well, not literally, but somewhat figuratively as Newcastle build towards an NRL preliminary final for just the sixth time in club history.

While obviously being focused on their own red-and-blue backyard ahead of Sunday's clash with Penrith at Accor Stadium (4pm), Holbrook has likened different play-off opponents this series to contrasting fighting styles.

"We've done a good job of being aware of what we're going to face," Holbrook said while addressing media at Knights headquarters on Thursday.

Don Nelson, legendary coach and five-time NBA champion as player, dies at 86

Don Nelson, the second-winningest coach in NBA history who won five championships as a player with the Boston Celtics, died on Sunday. He was 86.
