Emirates’ New Economy Headrest Wraps Around Your Neck So You Won't Ever Need A Travel Pillow Again
Emirates has a new coach seat headrest that wraps around your nack, so that no travel pillow is needed. It’s supposed to help you sleep on long haul flights.
The airline is beginning to install an economy class headrest that unfolds around a passenger’s neck like a travel pillow built into the seat. Airlines, and especially Emirates, is given to hype (‘game changing’) but this gimmicky change may actually be really positive. There’s only so much investment that low margin coach tickets are going to pay for, so small touches (like cupholders or footrests in Singapore Airlines economy) are especially meaningful.
Emirates is installing 8-way headrests in economy class
Emirates has begun installing a new comfort feature in the economy-class cabins of its Airbus A350 and A380, and Boeing 777 aircraft. The airline is adding the U-Dream 8-way headrest, an option for the Safran Seats Z400 economy seats fitted in these aircraft, which adds four adjustability functions to the standard kinematic of a 4-way headrest, to create additional neck and head support.
The padded and leather-trimmed U-Dream headrest is easy to clean and features flexible side wings that can be folded inwards to gently cradle the head and neck and enable sleeping without the head falling forwards or sideways. The headrest also moves vertically and tilts to give support for passengers with a wide range of heights and body types. The design can enable passengers who usually carry travel pillows to leave them at home.

Dubai’s Emirates airline adds world-first feature to Economy Class
Emirates Airline has introduced a new adjustable U-Dream headrest headrest across its Economy Class cabins, billed as a ‘world first’ by the Dubai carrier. It is designed to provide full head and neck support while passengers sleep or relax inflight.
The U-Dream headrest is already installed on three Airbus A350 aircraft, with all Emirates A350s set to feature the product by the end of 2026. Installation will begin on retrofitted Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s from 2027, while the feature will come pre-installed on all 270 Boeing 777X aircraft ordered by the carrier.
Developed in collaboration with Safran Seats as part of its Z400 seat, the leather headrest features flexible side wings that fold inwards to cradle the head and neck, helping prevent passengers’ heads from falling forwards or sideways while sleeping. It can also be moved vertically and tilted to accommodate different heights and body types and has been independently tested to meet European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) standards.
