Exec sacked for ‘misleading’ CBA over mortgage broker relationship
The workplace umpire has upheld the sacking of a senior Commonwealth Bank loan executive for misleading the lender about secret communications he had on WeChat with a mortgage broker whom the bank suspected was getting kickbacks for referrals.
Shun Wang failed in his unfair dismissal claim after the Fair Work Commission held his evidence “wholly unreliable” and that he “intentionally misled” the bank that he did not know the broker, who was involved in loans he approved in 2024.

‘Lazy to verify’: Senior CBA lender who denied knowing ‘Hugo’ loses unfair dismissal case
A Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) home loan approver has lost his unfair dismissal case after he told investigators he was “lazy to verify” a borrower’s payslip income, and insisted he had never heard of anyone called Hugo.
Deputy President Gerard Boyce dismissed Shun Wang’s application yesterday after he found that Wang intentionally misled the bank’s internal investigators and then “sought to intentionally mislead the Commission.”
This case adds to the picture of how bank referral channels can be gamed – those channels have been under close scrutiny since CBA’s February self-report sparked a broader mortgage fraud reckoning.

CBA home lender who shared loan updates on WeChat and misled investigators loses unfair dismissal claim
A Commonwealth Bank home lending executive dismissed after an internal whistleblower investigation has lost his unfair dismissal claim. Deputy President Boyce found all four allegations against him proven and that he intentionally gave false evidence to the Commission.
A senior Commonwealth Bank home lender on a $250,000 base salary has failed to overturn his dismissal. The Fair Work Commission found he intentionally misled the bank’s whistleblowing investigators and then sought to mislead the Commission itself.
Deputy President Boyce found all four allegations against the worker substantiated and dismissed his application under s.394 of the Fair Work Act 2009. The worker was a Home Lending Executive, the most senior of the bank’s three lender levels, from 16 November 2020 until his dismissal on 29 July 2025. His income was well above the high income threshold, but because he was covered by the Commonwealth Bank Enterprise Agreement 2023 he could still bring the claim under s.382(b)(ii).
