    Giant, spiked hail falls as 'very dangerous' storms hit Queensland

    A series of "very dangerous" storms have brought hail up to seven centimetres in size to parts of south-east Queensland.

    The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Logan, parts of Ipswich, Gold Coast, Brisbane City and Scenic Rim Council areas.

    The bureau warned the thunderstorm is likely to produce damaging, locally destructive winds and large, possibly giant hailstones, as well as heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding.

    Hail stones measuring between three and seven centimetres have been recorded at Yamanto, Flinders View, Ripley and Mudgeeraba between 2:30pm and 3:30pm, the bureau confirmed.

    Dangerous storms smash parts of south-east Queensland

    Golf ball-sized hailstones have fallen in parts of south-east Queensland as a dangerous supercell tore through on Tuesday afternoon.

    The storms swept through multiple regions including the Gold Coast, where residents took to social media to post videos of their backyards filled with thick hail that resembled snow.

    Ice nuggets measured up to 7 centimetres and hammered cars in the suburb of Mudgeeraba.

    As the storm swept over Ipswich, suburbs were transformed into a sea of white.

    Augustine Heights and Redbank Plains were left unrecognisable after the weather event.

    Isaac Heeney finished outside of the top five in the Brownlow Medal count.

    Heeney was one of five Swans players stood down by the club following a post-match incident in Melbourne last month.

    The AFL has avoided the unwanted scenario of one of Sydney's suspended players winning the Brownlow Medal, with Isaac Heeney finishing outside the count's top five.

    The league had a contingency plan in place if Heeney had won the game's highest individual honour.

    But Nick Daicos's record-breaking number of votes, and prolific polling from Bailey Smith and Marcus Bontempelli, meant the plan never needed to come into play.

    Nick Daicos will receive a financial windfall worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from his Brownlow win, including a bonus that was written into his Collingwood playing contract and proceeds from a marketing campaign that kicked off before the medal was even around his neck.

    A box of Nike T-shirts commemorating Daicos’ triumph arrived at Crown Palladium while the count was still in progress, while towering billboards went up around Melbourne.

    Nike, a Collingwood partner with whom the 23-year-old also has an independent deal, launched the campaign branded “inevitable” on the morning of the Brownlow count.

    Daicos is one of the small handful of AFL players who command such independent deals, earning more than $500,000 a year from commercial partnerships alongside his Magpies contract, which this masthead reported was worth $1.2-1.3 million last season and runs to 2029.

    FROM unexpected threes to unexpectedly missing out, an entertaining Brownlow Medal count delivered some surprises on Monday night.

    Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos, as expected, claimed victory with a record 47 votes to win by 11.

    There were some anomalies when comparing Brownlow votes to votes in the AFL Coaches Association's Champion Player of the Year, but not as many as previous years.

    Australian shares finished the week down 0.6 per cent as the oil price pushed higher and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s effort to steady the bond market proved fleeting.

    The S&P/ASX 200 Index fell 24.9 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 9058.9 on Friday, with six out of the 11 sectors in the red.

    This followed a nearly 1 per cent fall on Wall Street as the yield on the US 10-year note rose 6 basis points to 4.70 per cent. The effect of Bessent’s buybacks of long-dated government debt had worn off after just 24 hours.

    ASX slides for second week amid sell-off in local banks

    Australian shares have fallen for a second week amid high oil prices, US bond market concerns and a sell-off in local banks as housing market gloom persists.

    The S&P/ASX200 fell 24.9 points on Friday, down 0.27 per cent, to 9,058.9, as the broader All Ordinaries lost 28.8 points, or 0.31 per cent, to 9269.7.

    The top 200 has dropped almost 2.5 per cent since resetting record highs earlier in August after housing market concerns sparked a banking sell-off that has loomed large over earnings season.

    Energy and gold stocks offered some support as oil prices climbed and historically high US debt and Treasury yields rattled investors, prompting the US government to intervene in its roughly $US60 trillion ($A84 trillion) bond market.

Ripple, meanwhile, can process cross-border transactions in seconds with complete transparency and minimal fees.

    XRP is attempting to stabilize around the psychologically important $1 level after recent weakness, while a sharp increase in large-value XRP Ledger transactions and rising futures open interest points to greater market activity.

    The combination has placed the XRP price at an important technical juncture, although the latest data does not yet establish a confirmed bullish reversal.

    On-chain data cited by market analysts shows that transactions worth more than $1 million on the XRP Ledger increased 280% over a 24-hour period, with more than 38 such transfers recorded. At the same time, Binance XRP futures open interest reportedly climbed to about $461 million, up from roughly $360 million earlier in August.

    Australia faces worst growth slump in decades

    Australia is facing its longest stretch of weak economic growth since the early 1990s recession, but stubborn inflation pressures are still expected to force the Reserve Bank to raise interest rates again, according to a new report by Deloitte Access Economics.

    The firm slashed its outlook for the Australian economy in its latest set of quarterly forecasts on Tuesday, predicting the economy will grow by just 1.3 per cent this financial year and 1.9 per cent in 2027-28 – marking the most prolonged stretch of sub-2 per cent growth in three decades.

    As the housing market flattens, new opportunities for buyers emerge

    The combination of high inflation, higher interest rates, weakening economic growth and softening consumer and business sentiment is starting to take its toll on the housing market.

    That's according to the newly minted chief economist at property valuation and advisory firm, Herron Todd White, Cameron Kusher.

    Noting the variance in the national economic performance, the weaker economic conditions over the quarter reflect weakening consumer and business confidence and the early impact of two increases in the cash rate over the quarter, Kusher says.

    Net overseas migration added 301,000 people to Australia’s population last year, the lowest increase since mid-2022 but still above the pre-pandemic pace.

    The new figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics come amid an increasingly fraught political debate around immigration, after Pauline Hanson’s declaration that Australian society should be “monocultural”.

    After collapsing below zero during the Covid lockdowns, annual migration growth sprang back to as high as 556,000 in late 2023.

    Since then, net overseas migration (Nom) has tracked steadily down – a fact the government has been keen to emphasise amid repeated attacks from the Coalition that Labor has failed to bring the numbers of arrivals back to “sustainable” levels.

    New data shows a net increase of 301,000 migrants to Australia in 2025, marginally down from 306,000 in 2024. 

    It is the 14th consecutive quarter of net overseas migration above 300,000. 

    The federal opposition has accused Labor of locking in an unsustainable new normal for migration.

    The figures, released on Thursday, showed 301,000 people landed in Australia in 2025, almost unchanged from the previous year's net migration intake of 306,000.

    Lower migration won’t fix Australia’s housing woes

    Politicians need to level with voters about the trade-offs of lower migration: an ageing population, lower economic growth and the possibility of skill shortages.

    Canberra’s febrile atmosphere has provided little oxygen for sensible discussion on the economic realities of immigration policy.

    On the political right, for instance, a fierce tug-of-war is under way to claim credit for harder-line migration policies. The Coalition has proposed deeper screening for migrants from non-liberal democracies ruled by fundamentalists, extremists and dictators to weed out applicants who don’t subscribe to our values.
