    PREVIEW: Glasgow 2026 field athletics stacked with established and emerging stars

    Pole vaulters Nina Kennedy and Kurtis Marschall, Matthew Denny in the discus and high jumper Nicola Olyslagers are all on top of the world rankings, which confirms they come into the Games in great form. 

    Marschall is aiming to be the first Australian field athlete, and male in any event, to win three consecutive Commonwealth titles. Olympic champion Kennedy and World Champion medallist Denny are also defending Commonwealth champions.

    Glasgow 2014 champion and former World Champion Eleanor Patterson is ranked second behind Olyslagers. 

    Australian long jump record holder Brooke Buschkuehl, who became a mum to Bobby only 12 months ago, is determined to turn her two Commonwealth silvers into gold. She has been in great form but almost got beaten at Nationals by 19-year-old sensation Delta Amidzovski. Coached by her mum Becky, she has jumped 6.84m this year and could cause an upset on Games debut. 

    Australian athletes look to kick-start Glasgow gold rush

    It is down to business on the opening day of Athletics and Para-athletics action at Scotstoun Stadium, where Rhiannon Clarke, Yual Reath, Lauren Ryan and Rose Davies will lead the nation into battle as the first medals of the program go on the line in Glasgow.

    Para-athletics star Clarke (WA, Danny Kevan, T38) already has Commonwealth Games silver and bronze to her name. The 23-year-old will be looking to complete the set with gold in the Women’s 100m T38, but it won’t be easy.

    Clarke is ranked second with her 12.72-second personal best but has her work cut out for her to chase down Sophie Hahn (ENG) at 12.38-seconds.

    Brown field of dreams snaps Dolphins' record win streak

    Dylan Brown's first ever NRL field goal has lifted Newcastle to a dramatic 13-12 win over the Dolphins.

    Brown's 76th-minute one-pointer was against the grain in Newcastle, where the Dolphins dominated possession and territory in the second half as they hunted a ninth straight victory.

    It was the Dolphins' first loss since being beaten in Wellington by the Warriors on Anzac Day.

    "That's an example of a big player in a big moment, and he delivered for us," Newcastle coach Justin Holbrook said.

    "He slotted it like he's kicked 100 of them, and it was his first."

    Averaging 35 points over a club-record run of eight wins, the absence of Dolphins halfback Isaiya Katoa (wrist) and State of Origin quintet Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Tom Flegler, Max Plath, Jack Bostock and Selwyn Cobbo was telling.

    $13 million man ices late field goal as Joey’s Knights fear laid bare

    A costly captain’s challenge marked the end of a thriller comeback attempt by the Dolphins on Sunday as the Knights claimed a 13-12 victory in Newcastle.

    Two quick tries for the Dolphins put the game on its head late in the second half, with Newcastle forced to think fast to find the answer to secure the win.

    Dylan Brown was the man of the moment for the home side, calling for his teammates to set him up to nail a field goal from 20 metres out.

    The $13 million recruit smashed the field goal with ease, however, the Dolphins’ attack were not disheartened by the one-point gap on the scoreboard.

    As it happened: Knights pip Dolphins; Eels upset Manly

    One of the game's great rivalries was on show at CommBank Stadium to launch Sunday's NRL action with the Eels hosting old foes Manly.

    The Eels and Sea Eagles have met 165 times since 1947 and it's the boys from the northern beaches who held a sizeable head-to-head advantage which they added to with a 33-18 win at 4 Pines Park in Round 8.

    This time however, the Eels were able to turn the tables in an upset, securing a 23-14 victory. 

    Next up, the action headed to Newcastle to bring down the curtain on Round 18 with the Knights hosting the Dolphins.

    The Knights and Dolphins have met just six times previously, with Newcastle winning five of those.

    Team India and Chennai Super Kings batter Sarfaraz Khan on Friday said he worked on his fitness and strike rate in white ball cricket during the two years he missed playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The right-handed Mumbai batter was not picked by any side in the IPL editions of 2024 and 2025, before he made a comeback in IPL 2026 with Chennai Super Kings this year.

    “The biggest challenge for me in the IPL was to make a comeback and to play with a good strike rate,” Sarfaraz told reporters during the jersey launch of Mumbai Western Suburbs Aakash Tigers here ahead of the fourth edition of the T20 Mumbai League.

    Those feelings of regret are probably amplified, if you're on the Gold Coast Titans football staff, who let the unheralded halfback slip through their fingers and across the Tasman last season, landing at NZ Warriors HQ.

    After five years and 69 first-grade games for the Titans, Boyd needed a change of scenery, and signed a two-year deal that saw him buried on a depth chart and initially consigned to reserve grade.
