Why I’m impressed (and frustrated) with the BYD Seal U
Mat Watson gets behind the wheel of the BYD Seal U, a super‑affordable plug‑in hybrid SUV. But does it stack up against the best in its class?
The BYD Seal U is shaking up the family SUV scene, taking on popular names like the Nissan Qashqai, Peugeot 3008, and MG HS. I spent some time getting hands-on with its exterior, interior, tech, and performance to see if it really lives up to the hype – and whether the bold claims from China stack up in the real world.

BYD Sealion 08 and Seal 08 revealed as new flagship EVs for 2026
BYD has confirmed plans for two new flagship electric vehicles – the Sealion 08 large SUV and the Seal 08 sedan – both due to launch in China in early 2026. They showcase new technology and a more upmarket direction for the rapidly expanding brand and at least one of them is all but certain for Australia.
China’s most recognisable car brand, BYD, has teased two new models recently, confirming them for production imminently.
First up: the Sealion 08 large SUV has been teased by BYD. Not the Sealion 8 hitting Oz mid-2026 (confused yet?) but a bigger, meaner beast aimed squarely at luxury Chinese rivals like Zeekr.

BYD teases Seal 08 sedan and Sealion 08 SUV as its most luxurious Ocean Series models yet
Ahead of an official reveal in early 2026, BYD has locked in two new range-topping models for its ‘Ocean Series’ of models.
BYD has offered shadowy teasers for production versions of what will become the Seal 08 sedan and Sealion 08 SUV.
Poised to become the flagship models of their respective ranges, the ‘08’ versions of the Seal sedan line-up and Sealion SUV range, will enter the Chinese market as the most upmarket versions of BYD’s mainstream Ocean Series.
The Seal 08 has been previewed already in concept form, as the Ocean S, featuring a long-wheelbase sedan design with minimalist head- and tail-light designs, subtly blistered front and rear guards, and massive alloy wheels.
