VIDEO: George Clooney on the real meaning of courage

SARAH FERGUSON:  I'm very well, thank you.  I want to start by asking about his role that Noah Baumbach has created for you, Jay Kelly. What is it about the role that appealed to you?

GEORGE CLOONEY:  Well, I mean, first and foremost, it was the chance to work with Noah before I read the script, and then I saw the script and I thought I was really lucky to be able to play a character that was so self-involved and so filled with qualities that I find very sad – regret, lack of actual love. Things that I think are difficult things for people in life, whether you're a movie star or not, and I thought it was a really interesting character study.

George Clooney is not Jay Kelly. That much he is sure of.

But when a famous movie star of a certain age decides to take on a role as a famous movie star of a certain age, full of regrets and realising that he’s missed out on so much of his own life in pursuit of greatness and fame, it does invite some questions.

George Clooney Admits to Pranking ’30 Different Actors’ With Fake Letters From Bill Clinton and Brad Pitt | Video

“I’d find a movie that wasn’t a great film and I’d write, ‘I loved you in this film,'” the “Jay Kelly” star shares

George Clooney said over the years he’s pranked several actors by writing fake letters that he signs as former President Bill Clinton and legendary actor Brad Pitt.

He broke down his gag while chatting with Jason and Travis Kelce on Wednesday’s episode of their podcast series “New Heights.”

“Jimmy Kimmel gave me a stack of stationery with a presidential seal and Bill Clinton’s name on it,” Clooney explained. “And I would send notes to all these actors from Bill Clinton, I’d sign it — and I’d find a movie that wasn’t a great film and I’d write, ‘I loved you in this film.’”

George Clooney Admits to Legendary Bill Clinton Prank on Actors: 'I Do That A Lot'

George Clooney may be one of Hollywood's A-list actors, but he has no problem pulling a prank or two for fun. The actor recently spilled the beans and admitted to having pranked more than a few fellow actors pretending to be Bill Clinton, thanks to stationary.

In his guest appearance on the New Heights with Jason & Travis Kelce, host Jason Kelce asked Clooney if it was true that he once stole the former president's official stationery and wrote to them how much he loved their movies.

"So, no. Jimmy Kimmel gave me a stack of stationery with a presidential seal and Bill Clinton's name on it. And I would send notes to all these actors from Bill Clinton. I'd sign it, and I'd find a movie that wasn't a great film of theirs, and I'd be like, 'You know I loved you in this film,' and I'd write these notes. And I'd send them," explained Clooney.

VIDEO: George Clooney on the real meaning of courage

In George Clooney’s latest movie, ‘Jay Kelly’, he plays a conceited, vain, hugely successful Hollywood star. The movie was written and directed by Noah Baumbach. He speaks to Sarah Ferguson about the role.

Noah Baumbach's Latest Film is an Homage to Hollywood's Glamorous Past

Noah Baumbach has directed 13 films and notched four Academy Award nominations. His newest film, Jay Kelly, is a celebration of Hollywood—its studios, its system, its stars. It is also a movie he wanted to have fun making, a feeling he’d lost for a while. “It’s hard to write something and say, I’m going to fall in love with movies again,” Baumbach recently told The New Yorker. “I mean, it could have not paid off.” But when you have George Clooney playing a movie star, and Adam Sandler as his manager, you’re already halfway there. —Maggie Turner

George Clooney has no interest in retirement at 64, 'I can still hang'

When Billy Crudup met George Clooney 15 years ago, the aura was real.

“It was pretty clear: He's George Clooney through and through,” Crudup says of his costar in the Netflix dramedy “Jay Kelly” (in select theaters now, streaming Dec. 5). “He truly understands the space that he occupies and has found a remarkable comfort in it.”

Flash back 40 years or so, though, and it's a much different Clooney. That guy is bombing auditions, including a reading for Francis Ford Coppola where Clooney’s agent told him the next day that “The Godfather” director thought he was drunk. Unlike his title character in “Jay Kelly,” who rides an accidental first audition into A-list status early in his career, Clooney didn’t find fame until he was 33 as the star of 1990s medical drama "ER."
