Vingegaard seals Giro d’Italia and is eighth cyclist to complete Grand Tour set

Jonas Vingegaard completed his Giro d’Italia triumph, securing the first part of a coveted Grand Tour double in a procession finale around Rome won by the home hero Jonathan Milan. Vingegaard rolled into the Italian capital needing just to complete the flat final stage to claim overall victory and the triple crown of road cycling’s three-week showpieces.

The Visma-Lease a Bike rider is now the eighth man to win the Giro, Tour de France and Vuelta a España, joining Bernard Hinault, Eddy Merckx and Vincenzo Nibali in reaching one of the sport’s hardest goals. His attentions now turn to the Tour in July and a showdown with Tadej Pogacar, road cycling’s biggest star and his key rival for the Grande Boucle.

Giro d'Italia: Jonas Vingegaard on verge of victory after winning stage 20

Overall leader Jonas Vingegaard launched an attack during the tough final climb to clinch victory in Saturday's stage 20 of the Giro d'Italia.

It ensures the 29-year-old from Denmark will win the race as long as he safely finishes Sunday's final stage in Rome and become just the eighth man to complete the triple crown of road cycling's three-week showpieces.

The two-time Tour de France winner, who also won last year's Vuelta a Espana, is making his first appearance in the Giro and has won five stages of the race.

He started the penultimate stage covering 200km from Gemona del Friuli to Piancavallo four minutes three seconds ahead of second-placed Felix Gall of Austria in the general classification.

Giro d’Italia: family affair inspires Alberto Bettiol to solo triumph in Verbania

The Italian cyclist Alberto Bettiol attacked at the top of the final climb to ride solo to victory on stage 13 of the Giro d’Italia in Verbania on Friday, five years after his last stage win.

Bettiol, who also soloed to win a stage in 2021, caught Andreas Leknessund as they reached the Ungiasca summit and left the Norwegian in his wake before powering away on the descent to the shore of Lake Maggiore. The Italian took a quick glance over his shoulder before raising his arms long before the line in celebration, and his girlfriend, Lisa Finetti, was there to hug him after the finish.

Thanks for joining us today! Tomorrow sees a shift in tempo at the Giro, as the race enters the mountains for its final phase. This is where the race for the Maglia Rosa will ignite once more – and Afonso Eulálio’s long reign in pink come under its sternest so far. Be sure to tune in tomorrow for all of the action for what promises to be both a thrilling and crucial day in the race.

For Leknessund, it’s another frustrating near miss after his other runner-up finish behind Narváez in Fermo last week. He’s getting close though, and, as a strong climber, will have more opportunities from the breakaways when we reach the mountains.

Giro d'Italia 2026: Bettiol wins stage as Eulalio retains pink

Italy's Alberto Bettiol won stage 13 of the Giro d'Italia with a stunning acceleration on the final climb in the Italian lakes.

Bettiol, of XDS-Astana, rocketed past Norway's Andreas Leknessund over the top of the ascent on a road packed with fervent Italian fans, after the pair pulled away from the rest of a strong breakaway group.

Bettiol, 32, eventually won the 189km stage in bright sunshine by 26 seconds over Uno-X Mobility's Leknessund, despite nearly crashing after bouncing violently over a drain grate as he took more and more risks to secure victory.

Belgium's Jasper Stuyven of Soudal-Quick Step finished third at the head of a smaller group, 44 seconds back, with Britain's Mark Donovan fifth.
