Latta’s only grocery store will permanently close in September

LATTA, S.C. — The IGA on South Richardson Street in Latta will permanently close on Sept. 5, leaving the town without a grocery store within its limits.

Employees confirmed the closure date but declined to provide a reason for the decision.

Mayor Marcus McGirt addressed the closure in a Facebook post, calling the IGA “a staple of our community, serving generations of families.”

The nearest grocery option will be in Dillon, approximately seven miles away.

For residents without reliable transportation, that distance presents a significant challenge.

Latta resident David Brown said the closure will have a serious impact on the community.

New York City Mayor Mamdani moves forward with plans to open city-owned grocery stores, drawing criticism from local business owners as grocers argue they can't compete with tax-exempt, publicly funded stores.

Zohran Mamdani just announced NYC's 1st city-owned grocery store. Could the idea help reverse rising food prices across the U.S.?

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced this week that the Big Apple’s first city-owned grocery store will open in the South Bronx sometime next year, delivering on a central promise of his dark-horse 2025 campaign — and pitching the project, which aims to put one public, nonprofit supermarket in each borough by the end of his first term, as “physical proof of our conviction that government can be a force for good.”

"We are going to use the power of government to lower prices and make it easier for New Yorkers to put food on the table," Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democrat and democratic socialist, said on Monday. "When government understands its purpose as serving the very working people that it has left behind, time and again, it can make a difference in the most pressing struggles facing our city today.”

A family pack of Arnott’s Tim Tams, Oreos, laundry powder, dog bones and other items will be at the heart of Woolworths’ courtroom stand-off this week with Australia’s consumer watchdog, which has accused the retail giant of selling groceries through discounts that weren’t real.

When the blockbuster case resumes in Sydney’s Federal Court on Tuesday, Woolworths’ lawyers will deny the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s accusations that it sold pantry staples in its “Prices Dropped” program at the same or an even higher price.

Woolworths ‘fundamentally disagrees’ with ACCC price deception case

Woolworths will vigorously defend itself in a blockbuster court case brought by the competition regulator, which alleges that it and rival Coles misled shoppers by claiming to have dropped prices in special promotions when they had actually increased them.

Coles, the nation’s second-largest supermarket operator, made its defence against the allegations in February in the Federal Court, with the final judgment reserved until Woolworths presents its case. Woolworths’ hearing begins on Tuesday.
