Arbeloa's Real Madrid seeking greater consistency in tense LaLiga title race

Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa and his star striker Kylian Mbappe agree on at least one thing, ahead of Sunday's visit to face Valencia in LaLiga – the need for consistency.

"I'm not Gandalf the White," said Arbeloa after his team scraped a 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano last weekend in LaLiga, to stay one point behind leaders Barcelona.

The Spaniard meant, unlike the fictional Lord of the Rings wizard, he is not capable of magic to transform Real Madrid's fortunes. Only hard work will suffice.

"What I want from my players is what I'm seeing, commitment, attitude, mentality, knowing that to win each game, quality is not enough, consistency is key," said Arbeloa, six games into his tenure.

If disability pensioner Kathy Pope was in any doubt of the Herculean job ahead of her in suing mining billionaire Gina Rinehart over the state of their shared fence, she isn’t any longer.

Pope fronted up to the NSW Supreme Court – virtually – on Thursday for a brief mention of her legal suit against Australia’s richest person and the 12-kilometre boundary fence that separates their farms on the state’s Northern Tablelands.

It is no equal fight. On the one side is Pope, a vulnerable litigant with no legal representation and situated on her 157-hectare farm in Kingstown, west of Armidale. On the other is Rinehart with an estimated worth of $38 billion, half a dozen lawyers in the courtroom and ownership of some 42,000 hectares of farmland in the district.

Gina Rinehart, the disability pensioner and a fight over 12km of fencing

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime.

The enduring words of poet Robert Frost may not be familiar to mining billionaire and poetry aficionado Gina Rinehart, or to disability pensioner Kathy Pope, but the fence that runs between their respective properties on the state’s Northern Tablelands is no good.

Just how bad the fence is, and who is liable for what work at what cost, will be left to the NSW Supreme Court to decide, after Pope launched legal proceedings against Rinehart personally.

It is set to be the ultimate David versus Goliath fence dispute, pitting a hobby farmer with no means to afford legal representation against Australia’s richest person, worth an estimated $38 billion and with a legion of top-tier lawyers at her disposal.

Arsenal vs. Liverpool: We have 'point to prove' in title race – Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal must keep proving themselves worthy of top spot in the Premier League, starting with their clash against champions Liverpool. (0:41)

LONDON COLNEY, England — Mikel Arteta has said Arsenal have a "point to prove" against champions Liverpool as they aim to last the pace in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal sit six points clear at the table in pursuit of their first league success since 2004 having finished runners-up to Liverpool last term, their third consecutive second-place finish.

Liverpool beat Arsenal 1-0 at Anfield in August in an early setback but Arne Slot's side arrive for Thursday's reverse fixture 14 adrift of their opponents after a turbulent campaign despite spending almost £450 million ($607.04m) in the summer market.

Mikel Arteta has provided an update on the fitness of several first-team players ahead of our clash with Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on Thursday.

The boss was asked about several members of his squad in his pre-match press conference, including Kai Havertz, who is nearing a return to action.

“We are monitoring obviously his load, he has been out for a long time for two different reasons and he is very close,” Mikel said at the Sobha Realty Training Centre. “He trained this morning again and hopefully we are going to have him available in the best version of Kai Havertz.”

    Arsenal v Liverpool: Team news

The fitness of Hugo Ekitike and Kai Havertz is being monitored ahead of the Premier League showdown between Liverpool and Arsenal on Thursday night.

Ekitike, the Reds' top scorer this season with 11 goals in all competitions, missed the 2-2 draw at Fulham last weekend due to a hamstring complaint and delayed onset muscle soreness.

Asked for an update on the Frenchman, head coach Arne Slot said on Wednesday morning: "He has not trained with us until now and let's see if he can today.

"I've said, I think, two or three days ago when we played Fulham that he is not going to be out for long, but because games come so fast he is in between maybe training with the team or it would take him one or two days extra."

This England team’s most memorable brain explosions have occurred under the pressure of the contest. Equally impressive have been those that took place in the calm of meeting rooms and phone calls.

The lack of match preparation and casual arrogance of the planning have been well documented, but Jacob Bethell has shown in Melbourne and Sydney that his non-selection in the first three Test matches is another element in this dumbest Ashes tour.

‘Weak’ Australia whack as axed star’s return tipped, Stokes hand in Baz fate revealed

England’s media is licking its lips over the prospect of facing a “weak” Australia at home in the 2027 Ashes — yet still sharpening their knives for English coach Brendon McCullum and managing director of cricket Robert Key.

With the Ashes scoreline at 3-1 heading into the series finale at the SCG, English cricket writers are looking at conclusions of this tour and what they mean going forward.

A chaotic and historic victory at the MCG has given some optimism to the Poms — though the failings Down Under aren’t being ignored due to consolation wins.

By the time England return to Australia for their next Ashes tour in 2029, it will have been almost 50 years since the last truly competitive bout on these shores.

In 1982-83, an England side led by Bob Willis held the Ashes after Ian Botham’s extraordinary performances in the UK in 1981, and managed to keep their defence of the urn alive until the final day of the final Test in Sydney, where a draw was enough for the hosts to prevail 2-1.

OKC Thunder Have the Next Jalen Brunson, and Will Lose Him in NBA Free Agency?

A pair of notable NBA experts suggested this week that Oklahoma City Thunder guard Ajay Mitchell will be similar to Jalen Brunson. A talented and underrated reserve who became a superstar after leaving for a big contract in NBA free agency.

The Thunder have had an outstanding start to the 2025-26 season. After reaching the NBA Finals and winning the franchise’s first championship in the spring, this year’s team has been even better. They enter the weekend with a 26-5 record and are on pace to set a new single-season record for wins.

Unsurprisingly, their outstanding play has been led by their elite defense. However, this season they have gotten even better on offense as top star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is again playing at an MVP level, and Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams are playing like borderline All-Stars. Yet, one player who has been key in their offensive growth and is slipping under the radar nationally is guard Ajay Mitchell.

Bill Simmons nominates Ajay Mitchell for NSFW honor

Even to die-hard OKC Thunder fans, the astronomic rise of Ajay Mitchell in 2025-26 has caught everyone by surprise.

So much so, in fact, that The Ringer's Bill Simmons believes he deserves to be in the running for a new, made-up honor called the "Where The F*ck Did You Come From" award.

During a recent edition of The Bill Simmons Podcast, the eponymous host discussed some of the biggest breakthrough players of the year so far, noting how all names mentioned logged fewer than 15 minutes per game a season ago before bursting onto the scene during this year's campaign.

“It's hard to establish yourself and be on the gas on …

After the win, Daigneault responded to Mitchell's perfect shooting performance and his role with the Thunder this season. “He's obviously a very talented player and a really impactful player, really efficient player,” Daigneault said. “It's hard to establish yourself and be on the gas on a team that's really good — a team that's pretty established that you're coming into. And he's found an unbelievable blend and has threaded a very nice needle of asserting himself, and really not flinching. “Not being afraid, and being on the gas, but also doing it in a way that's not inappropriate with what the rest of the team is doing. He's got a great diet on that. It's really impressive, and he competes on the other end. So, it makes it really easy to ride with him. He played a great game tonight,” Daigneault concluded.

Thunder have a Jalen Williams problem they desperately need to solve

OKC Thunder star Jalen Williams is 13 games into his 2026 season after sitting out the first stretch due to offseason wrist surgery.

Many lobbied for patience when it came to giving the forward time to reacclimate, but now, roughly a month in, some fans may be starting to sound the alarm.

On the surface, J-Dub's numbers look fine. He's shooting 45.0 percent from the field and has similar assist and rebounding numbers to his All-Star campaign last year.

However, it has been his performance against higher-level competition that has raised concerns.

Jalen Williams has struggled significantly against teams with a winning record. He is shooting a dismal 38.7 percent against these contending teams, which is well below his overall per-game season averages.

How Jalen Williams Can Be Effective As Jump Shot Slow to Come Around

2025 was unforgettable for Jalen Williams. It was his first All-Star nod, first All-NBA and All-Defensive honors, and he won his first NBA Championship while getting his number retired at Santa Clara along the way. He did most of that work on torn ligaments in his wrist. That led to offseason surgery where he also had to get screws removed from his wrists before the season began before ultimately returning to the hardwood on Nov. 28 playing in the last 15 games for the Bricktown Ballers.

This season, Williams is not yet putting up those All-NBA level numbers. The fourth-year swingman is averaging 17.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.7 steals and 0.5 blocks per game while shooting 45% from the floor, 31% from deep and 84% at the line. His points and field goal percentage are at their lowest point since his rookie season.

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault on how Jalen Williams can continue being great

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault on how Jalen Williams can continue being great originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are still the favorites to win the championship, as they continue to defend their title. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander remains the team's best player, as he is one of the favorites to win the regular-season MVP.

While the reigning regular-season and Finals MVP is on the team, the Thunder are a great team because of their supporting cast. This season, the supporting cast has been great, but it is not reaching the heights of the previous campaign. Case in point, Jalen Williams is not having the best season, but everyone knows he has the potential to break out and be a star again.

Atlanta Hawks have 'explored' path to trade for Mavericks' Anthony Davis

Dallas Mavericks star forward/center Anthony Davis has been at the center of trade talks all season. Cooper Flagg has blossomed faster than anyone expected, despite being the first overall pick, and that has the team needing to prioritize his timeline. This is the last year that the Mavericks control their first-round pick, and Anthony Davis isn't getting any younger, cheaper, or more durable.

Trying to find teams interested in Anthony Davis may be a challenge, though. He's playing at a really high level, especially recently, but Rich Paul (his agent, CEO of Klutch Sports) will want an extension for him, and he's already making a lot of money for someone who can rarely stay healthy.

Would a move for Davis work for Raptors?

Mavericks hear from Hawks, Raptors, Bulls on Anthony Davis, but only at ‘bargain’

Several teams have checked in on Mavericks star Anthony Davis, but they are doing so with a clear hope that the price comes down.

According to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, the Hawks, Raptors, and Bulls have all made inquiries with Dallas about Davis. The common theme is that those teams would like to land him “at a bargain.”

“Teams like Atlanta and Toronto and Chicago that have called about Anthony Davis, they want to get him for cheap,” Fischer said. “That’s not what Dallas has any interest in doing. They want to sell him for the type of value Nico Harrison thought he was worth when he traded for him for Luka Doncic.”
