    Damaging winds to sweep Tasmania on Saturday after heatwave

    Tasmania is in for a battering on Saturday, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning damaging winds could gust up to 120km/h across much of the state.

    A severe weather warning has been issued for large parts of Tasmania, including Hobart, as a low-pressure system barrels towards the island’s south-west.

    The north-east and the Furneaux Islands are expected to be hit first, with damaging winds averaging 55 to 65km/h and gusts of around 100km/h forecast from mid-morning.

    Hobart and surrounding areas could see gusts reach 100km/h from late morning, while elevated and exposed locations may cop even stronger conditions, with gusts up to 120km/h possible.

    Campbell Town bushfire alert issued as state braces for severe heatwave

    A grass fire is burning close to the side of the road at Nile in Northern Tasmania, with air support being activated to assist with firefighting operations.

    Tasmanian Fire Service (TFS) crews are responding after receiving reports of a fire at the junction of Nile Road and Deddington Road.

    Police have advised the road is currently shut from Deddington Road to Glen Esk Road.

    Smoke, ash and embers from the bushfire are visible around Nile, but there is currently no threat to communities.

    A bushfire smoke alert has been issued for Campbell Town as parts of Tasmania brace for a severe heatwave.

    Communities across large parts of Australia have been urged to take precautions as temperatures begin to soar ahead of severe and extreme heatwave conditions, with parts of western Sydney expected to reach the low 40s by Saturday.

    The Bureau of Meteorology has issued heatwave warnings in New South Wales, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, with an extreme warning in place on the NSW south coast – indicating the highest level of risk.
