Michael Carrick rejects ‘ridiculous’ talk of easy start to Manchester United season

‘It’s not favourable. It’s an easy thing to throw out there’

Michael Carrick has dismissed suggestions that Manchester United’s opening two games against Hull and Ipswich represent a favourable start to the season. United travel to Hull for Saturday’s opening match before hosting Ipswich a week on Sunday. Both sides were promoted from the Championship.

Carrick is adamant neither game will prove easy. “For all of us to know this league, there’s no favourable start, I think it’s a tough start,” he said. “A promoted team away from home is a tough game.

“I’ve been involved in them in the past so I’m fully aware of what’s coming at us on Saturday, what we’ve got to be ready for. So it’s not favourable. It’s an easy thing to throw out there. But it’s pretty ridiculous in a certain way, [we are] not taking it that way at all.”

Charley Hull refuses to apologise after £100,000 scratchcard prank on caddie

Charley Hull has delivered an emphatic, unapologetic response towards those who criticised a prank on the eve of the Women’s Open.

Hull used pre-tournament media duties to reveal she bought fake scratchcards in a Blackpool joke shop, before using one to trick her caddie, Adam Woodward, into believing he had won £100,000. Hull filmed Woodward’s initially euphoric and subsequently despondent reaction to the incident.

While some onlookers saw the funny side of the stunt, Hull also drew harsh words for her treatment of Woodward. Many perceived it as unduly cruel. The caddie has worked for Hull for the vast majority of her professional career. Hull’s carefree, playful nature is well known within her sport.

Women's Open: Charley Hull responds to criticism of prank on caddie

Golfer Charley Hull has told critics to "lighten up" after receiving backlash for a scratchcard prank she played on her caddie.

In the lead up to the ongoing Women's Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes, Hull revealed she had purchased the ticket in a Blackpool joke shop and used it to trick caddie Adam Woodward into believing he had won £100,000 – a moment she caught on camera.

While many people have seen the funny side of the incident, Hull has faced criticism both on social media and from figures within golf, including four-time major winner Dame Laura Davies, who described the stunt as "extremely cruel" when asked about it on commentary.

Hull threaten legal action if they lose play-off final

Hull City owner Acun Ilicali is attending the Championship play-off final

Hull City owner Acun Ilicali has vowed to take legal action if the Tigers do not win Saturday's Championship play-off final against Middlesbrough.

Boro lost to Southampton in the semi-final – but were reinstated after Saints admitted to spying on the Teessiders' training session and were expelled from the competition.

"Our legal team says that we have to go for action, that's for sure," Ilicali told BBC Radio Humberside outside Wembley Stadium before kick-off in the final.

"So we have no doubt about it. Here, all we want is justice. If justice is broken, nobody will enjoy football."

Spying, Southampton and economic pressure cooker of the ‘richest match in football’

In elite football, competitive advantage is pursued relentlessly. Big clubs invest heavily in performance data and tactical analysis in the pursuit of marginal gains.

Yet that desperate search for gains has now led to one club, Southampton FC, suffering an enormous loss. Southampton admitted to spying on their opponent’s training session and were charged by the English Football League. They have been expelled from a match that could have seen them win promotion to the Premier League.

That match, the Championship playoff final, is often described as the most lucrative in football. Promotion to the Premier League is worth around £200 million in increased revenue.

After winning 2-0 in November, Hull could complete their first league double over Norwich since 1970-71.

Norwich have only won one of their last eight league trips to Hull (D3 L4), although are unbeaten in their last two (W1 D1).

Hull have only managed to win their final league game in one of the last 21 seasons (D9 L11), a 5-1 victory over Rotherham United in 2015-16.

After beating Cardiff 4-2 last season, Norwich could win their final league match of back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2011-12/2012-13 in the Premier League.

Hull 4-2 Derby: Late goals see Hull beat play-off rivals Derby

John Egan scored his first goal since September to give Hull a lead for the third time

Hull ended a three-game winless run and kept their automatic promotion hopes alive as late goals from John Egan and Lewis Koumas saw them overcome play-off rivals Derby.

The game was in the balance until the 75th minute, after a four-goal first half that saw Hull lead twice through a Callum Elder own goal and a fine Ollie McBurnie strike, only for Derby to equalise twice with goals from Craig Forsyth and Sammie Szmodics.

But John Egan's first goal since September, finishing off a well-worked passing move from the hosts, gave them the lead again, before Koumas sealed three points for Sergej Jakirovic's side, just two minutes after coming on as a substitute.

INTERVIEW: Eustace Aiming To 'Put Things Right' With Hull Response

Derby County Head Coach John Eustace has called for a collective response as his side look to bounce back from Saturday's defeat at Watford.

An out-of-character display from the Rams resulted in a 2-0 loss at Vicarage Road, but Eustace believes his squad possess the necessary character to respond positively at Hull on Tuesday evening.

The Tigers sit 5th in the Sky Bet Championship table, presenting another stern examination of Derby’s play-off credentials, as they aim to climb back into the top six at the MKM Stadium.

Ahead of the contest, Eustace spoke to RamsTV to discuss showing a reaction to Saturday and how quickly the Championship can change, while also providing the latest on the injury front.

Hull KR sweat on Lewis for WCC after shock Super League loss

A ‘frustrated’ Willie Peters reckons star five-eighth Mikey Lewis will have no-one to blame but himself if a tripping incident in the seismic loss to Super League debutants York endangers his World Club Challenge and Vegas involvement.

Lewis, the 2024 Man Steel, will come under scrutiny from the match review committee after tripping rival Liam Harris after he had kicked the ball during the second half of York’s blazing 19-18 win at LNER Stadium, secured with a 76th minute Ata Hingano field goal.

In their first-ever Super League game, the Knights stunned the champions and winners of the British domestic treble on opening night, a week out from the Robins’ world title bout with Brisbane.

Super League: York Knights 19-18 Hull KR – York stun defending champions

York Knights are the 25th different team to play in Super League

Reigning champions Hull KR suffered a shock defeat by debutants York Knights in the opening game of the 2026 Super League season.

Sam Wood's early try gave the hosts a surprise lead before Jai Whitbread barged over to make it 6-6 at the break.

Whitbread reached over for his second score to put the visitors in front and Sauaso Sue went in under the posts to seemingly put Hull KR in charge.

However, the game was turned on its head after the away side were reduced to 12 players after Mikey Lewis was sin-binned for a petulant trip on Liam Harris.

Major twist for Broncos as eight-Test star could be banned and miss World Club Challenge

The Brisbane Broncos might be facing a Hull KR team without Mikey Lewis in the World Club Challenge after the star half was sin-binned for a trip on Thursday night in the Super League. Hull KR suffered a stunning 19-18 loss to the newly-promoted York Knights in the opening game of the new Super League season.

Willie Peters' Hull side were leading 18-6 and looked well on their way to victory. But the match was turned on its head when Lewis was sin-binned for tripping Knights halfback Liam Harris while he was chasing his own kick.

Lewis stuck out his leg as Harris tried to run past him, and was sent to the bin for 10 minutes. It opened the door for the Knights to stage an incredible comeback, which ultimately saw Ata Hingano kick the game-winning field-goal with four minutes to play.
