Inadequate welfare payments leave almost two million Australians trapped in poverty
Inflationary government spending is missing the Aussies who need it most and driving up interest rates for everyone else.
Record government spending that has turbocharged inflation and forced the RBA to raise rates may not be filtering into the communities that need it most, with new data showing three in four households reliant on JobSeeker are living in poverty.
The joint research from Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) and UNSW found that this included one in five older singles and one in six children within income support households.

Three in four JobSeeker recipients struggling to live as frontline services get $4.7 million boost
For many Australians facing financial hardship, turning to government assistance is often in the hope that they won't end up below the poverty line. Unfortunately, that's rarely the case.
The Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) has found that there are an estimated 3.7 million people living in poverty in Australia, and around 1.9 million of those are in households reliant on government support payments. That's because, at their current rate, the payments aren't enough to adequately cover an Australian household's needs.
In the spotlight are JobSeeker, Youth Allowance and Parenting Payments, which ACOSS chief Cassandra Goldie said are "so low they are forcing people into poverty".
