Indian Navy Augments Its Submarine Rescue Capability

Commissioned on August 31, INS Nipun significantly augments the Navy’s specialist diving, underwater intervention, salvage, and submarine rescue support capability.

On August 31, India commissioned INS Nipun, the second dedicated Diving Support Vessel (DSV) that serves as the mothership for the two Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicles (DSRVs) in service. With this, the Indian Navy crossed a threshold in a critical operational capability – submarine rescue – that has a bearing not just for India but for the entire region.

Submarines are some of the most complex machines in existence and their operation is highly specialized. Submarine rescue takes that to another level and is a forte of a very small group of countries.

Whyalla may make steel again one day. But years of uncertainty could still reshape the town

There is a shock reverberating through the regional South Australian town of Whyalla and its crisis-hit steelworks. This week, administrators KordaMentha and SA Premier Peter Malinauskas jointly announced they would abandon all attempts to restart the steelworks’ blast furnace.

At least 500 workers will lose their jobs, along with 100 people employed through labour-hire arrangements. The future of a further 200 “embedded contractors” remains uncertain.

To be clear, the closure of the blast furnace does not mean the end of the Whyalla steelworks. Efforts remain underway to find a buyer. While primary steelmaking will remain paused for an estimated two to four years, other operations such as mining and steel rolling will continue.

‘Bitterly political’ Albanese move exposed following Whyalla steelworks’ collapse

The loss of hundreds of jobs at the critical South Australia Whyalla steel manufacturing site has left the Labor federal government's Future Made in Australia policy in tatters, writes Nick Cater.

The end of metal production at Whyalla matters far beyond the loss of 600 jobs or the loss of face for Anthony Albanese.

It extinguishes an industrial capability established in World War II, when Australia understood the danger of depending on other countries for the materials on which its security depended.

The Prime Minister recognised the plant’s importance for sovereign capability when he announced a $2.4 billion package to keep it open three months before the 2025 election.
