Irish billionaire’s $1m Melbourne Cup gamble badly misfires

Point Of Law has won the 2026 Lexus Melbourne Cup, leaving Irish billionaire JP McManus ruing his mammoth $1 million bet on Hopewell Rock, after the heavily backed horse failed to deliver.

The 75-year-old was in for a staggering $9.6m payout but as the horse that shot to favouritism on the back of his huge wager finished in ninth, McManus looked like he’d be leaving Flemington with significantly lighter pockets.

However, a savvy contingency plan provided a silver lining for the billionaire.

Among his many wagers on the 2026 race that added up to $2 million, McManus placed a $235,000 bet on the Ciaron Maher-trained Point of Law at $8.50.

JP McManus unloads at Call Of The Card

Racing heavyweight JP McManus has made a stunning splash at the Call Of The Card, backing Hopewell Rock for a potential $10 million return as part of a string of enormous wagers.

McManus, who will be represented in this year’s Cup by Trustyourinstinct and Goodie Two Shoes, was happy to bet around his own runners as he opened his shoulders at Monday’s traditional pre-Cup betting spectacular.

That left him with $1 million invested on Hopewell Rock and a potential collect of about $10 million.

Asked why he had gone so heavily on a horse he does not own, McManus kept his reasoning simple.

Rozalia Russian’s custom Alin Le’Kal falls into the latter category, with her blush corseted top and skirt set featuring the most exquisite hand beading. Paired with a coordinating soft pink Melissa Jackson hat, Paris Texas heels and vintage Christian Dior pearls, she’s a vision of refined glamour.

Tommy Berry (Soul Of Spain): “Began well. Found a nice spot early but he was just a bit too honest in the run and he felt the pinch late. Very honest in defeat.”

I found love at an Irish matchmaking festival – and I want others to do the same

Mary Timby was fed up with dating apps when she booked a trip to Ireland on a whim last summer – from the comfort of her Colorado couch.

The spur-of-the-moment trip was unlike her: Timby, 39, is a self-described "total planner".

But she'd always wanted to visit Ireland, and she found herself exhausted by the local dating scene while navigating a career transition. And then she remembered a few throwaway lines from a comedy series about a matchmaking festival in Ireland.

So she looked it up – and not only was the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival real, it was also taking place during the entire month of September, when she was scheduled to visit.

The Queen will explore the “transformative power of reading” in a new BBC documentary.

Camilla will feature in the BBC Arts programme The Book That Changed My Life, which will be broadcast in the National Year of Reading 2026 and is due to air next month.

The BBC has said the documentary film will follow the Queen as she meets four remarkable people whose lives have been changed by books at moments when they most needed them.

“Warm, emotional, and full of hope, the film explores how reading can lift us, open our minds and, sometimes, change the course of a life,” it has teased.
