Papua New Guinea fisherman rescued after 41 days at sea

In Kiribati, fishermen rescued 18-year-old Luka Rahan from Papua New Guinea, who had been drifting at sea for 41 days. He was found alone in a boat between the islands of Tarawa and Maiana — about 2,000 kilometers from Bougainville, where he had set out from.

As ABC News reports, Rahan went fishing with his cousin from northern Bougainville last month. The boat developed engine problems at sea, and because they had no anchor, they began to drift.

A Papua New Guinean man has been rescued off Kiribati, 41 days after he set out on a fishing trip with a relative from their home in north Bougainville.

Luka Rahan was found yesterday afternoon by a group of Kiribati fishermen, his boat drifting between the islands of Tarawa and Maiana.

The 18-year-old was severely dehydrated and alone, his cousin was lost overboard earlier in the week.

Luka was taken to the capital, Tarawa, where he is recovering.

Jonathan Anthony Kunau, a Papua New Guinean engineer who works in Tarawa, rushed to the hospital when he heard about the rescue.

"He's from my country, he's my countryman," he said. "I need to be there for him, make him feel at home."
