“A lesson to all musicians”: Lily Allen amazes at TikTok Entertainment Centre

Lily Allen hasn't performed in Australia since 2019 — but this week's West End Girl tour was worth the wait.

Over two nights, the storied British pop star performed for thousands at Sydney's TikTok Entertainment Centre.

Allen's newest album was re-imagined as a highly theatrical one-woman show.

She begins in a hotel room, all on her own, before re-enacting every song on the semi-autobiographical concept album for almost an hour.

This is what triple j had to say about the West End Girl tour's Sydney stage debut.

"The show opened with a cello ensemble playing Lily's old bangers, accompanied by a diva conductor who revved up the crowd up to scream out her hits."

Lily Allen’s West End Girl could have been ‘excitingly different’. But it’s lost in an arena

You've used all of your gift articles. 3 more will become available on the 1st of every month.

In her brutal narrative album of marital discord and disaster, West End Girl, Lily Allen has the perfect vehicle to merge several elements of her career and appeal into something new.

There’s the frank feminist who bridged aspiring-cynic teens with seasoned-cynic adults and the hook-tastic pop singer who made that sound like a hoot; the hedonist-who-tried-it-all and the romantic-despite-it-all; the latter-day stage actor of other people’s words and the life-long diarist who will share her truth.

So turning last year’s record firstly into a small theatre creation and then into this year’s arena pop show – to which you can add a solid bit of sisterhood bonding over male treachery, with women near me regularly yelling out affirmations (“you’re too good for him … get him Lils”) and condemnations (“he’s a c—” and, to the marital interloper Madeline, “f— you bitch”) – didn’t just make sense, it was excitingly different for an artist who has not always found live performance a particularly interesting exercise.

‘A painful lesson’ – Hamilton apologises as he takes responsibility for strategy gamble in Singapore

Lewis Hamilton has conceded that the decision to stay out on track rather than pit under the Virtual Safety Car during the Singapore Grand Prix was his, labelling it as a "painful lesson".

Lewis Hamilton has stated that he takes “full responsibility” for a strategy gamble that backfired in the Singapore Grand Prix, with the seven-time World Champion calling the move a “painful lesson”.

After starting the race from P3 on the medium tyres, Hamilton was the first driver to make a pit stop when he switched to the soft compound. An opportunity to make a second stop arose when a Virtual Safety Car was deployed, with Ferrari team mate Charles Leclerc amongst those to pit.

‘A painful lesson’: Hamilton accepts fault for costly strategy error

The two sides of the Ferrari garage had two very different emotions at the end of the Singapore Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton’s own mistake cost the team a double podium finish.

Charles Leclerc narrowly missed out on victory to a resurgent Max Verstappen and finished second.

Hamilton’s day ended in horribly, as the veteran accepted “full responsibility” for a costly decision to stay out on old tyres to try to make a strategy gamble work.

After starting in third, Hamilton’s rash decision didn’t pay off and the 41-year-old ended the race in sixth place, behind the two McLaren drivers.
