The Lion King to play in Brisbane, but will it rule the box office?

When The Lion King first played in Brisbane in 2014, it broke the record for the number of tickets sold in a single day.

QPAC executive director Rachel Healy has been hearing the stories from longtime staff.

“They said there was nothing like it in QPAC’s history, that kind of absolute bedlam,” she said.

“The phones went crazy, and there were queues forming all the way down the stairs outside the box office. It completely sold out its 19-week season.

Disney Theatrical Group has announced The Lion King will return to Brisbane, opening at QPAC’s Lyric Theatre in November for a 17-week run.

Captain Alex Pearce will play his 150th AFL game in Fremantle’s Round 15 clash with Geelong.

During the Club’s Stealth Round clash with Geelong at Optus Stadium, captain Alex Pearce will reach the milestone of 150 AFL games for Fremantle.

Selected with pick No.37 in the 2013 National Draft, the now 31-year-old will become just the 24th Fremantle representative to play 150 or more AFL games.

Pearce will join Luke Ryan (190 games) and Andrew Brayshaw (183 games) as current Fremantle players to have achieved the feat.

Twice in his career, Pearce has finished a season (2022, 2023) with the most ‘one percenters’ recorded in the Club’s top 20 of all time, depicting his unwavering attitude as a pivotal pillar in his key defensive lockdown role for the team.

‘Lion of Mesopotamia’: How Aymen Hussein beat tragedy to reach World Cup

Iraq’s ‘most expensive footballer’, the striker who scored Iraq’s qualifying goal against Bolivia, retraces his journey about his difficult path to fame.

It has been a long, relentless journey to the World Cup for Iraq’s centre-forward Aymen Hussein, who propelled his country to the tournament for the first time in 40 years when he scored a winning goal against Bolivia in Mexico in the qualifiers.

When he was just 12 and already playing football for a local team, his father was brutally murdered while buying materials to build the family home.

A few years after that, his older brother was kidnapped, and he has not been heard from since.

He was held at a US airport for ‘seven hours’. He just scored Iraq’s first World Cup goal in 40 years!

Aymen Hussein scored Iraq’s first FIFA World Cup goal in 40 years in a landmark moment for the 2007 Asian champions.

Iraq are back on the global stage after four decades in the international wilderness thanks to Australian head coach Graham Arnold, who guided the Lion of Mesopotamia through an inter-confederation play-off.

Up against Erling Haaland and Norway in Group I on Wednesday (AEST), Iraq hero Hussein scored a memorable equaliser in Foxborough – just outside of Boston.

His perfect 39th-minute header marked Iraq’s first World Cup goal since their 2-1 loss to Belgium on June 8, 1986.

It was also the 34th goal of the 30-year-old’s international career and it came after he was questioned for seven hours by US immigration officials after touching down on American soil.

‘It was madness in Baghdad’: René Meulensteen on coaching Iraq and helping Ronaldo

Iraq’s No 2 discusses his recipe for a World Cup shock, the players’ singing and his time assisting Alex Ferguson at Manchester United

Iraq’s journey to their first World Cup finals tournament in 40 years involved sacrifices unmatched by any other side. After 20 qualifiers, the team faced a decisive playoff in the Mexican city of Monterrey but, with Iraq dragged into the Middle East war and airspace closed, several staff and players had an arduous job getting there.

“They had to travel from different cities to Baghdad by car or bus,” says René Meulensteen, the assistant to Iraq’s head coach, Graham Arnold. “Some of those journeys took up to eight hours. Then, from Baghdad they travelled roughly 15 hours on bumpy roads to Amman, in Jordan, where occasional flights were still operating. The other Asian‑based players made their own way to Amman, so they could all travel together.”

Forget winning a final, these Bombers have a more pressing record to avoid

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime.

When it comes to Essendon and losing streaks, the chat or jibe – depending on your allegiance – typically involves the last time the once-mighty Bombers won a final. For the record, that was a five-point win over Melbourne in the 2004 elimination final.

While that remains a great frustration for anyone associated with the red and black, the Bombers are closing in on something even worse – tying a club record 17-game losing streak.

Fall short against North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night, and they’ll be up to 16 straight defeats, meaning the Bombers would somehow have to conjure a miracle victory over the surging Western Bulldogs a week later to avoid one of the darkest days in their 154-year history. Then comes Melbourne at the Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

Woman dies in suspected mountain lion attack, Colorado's first deadly encounter since 1999

A woman has died in a rare suspected mountain lion attack in Colorado on Thursday, officials said.

Hikers told authorities they saw a mountain lion near a person who was lying on the ground 100 yards away around 12:15 p.m., on the Crosier Mountain trail in unincorporated Larimer County, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said in a news release.

The hikers scared the lion away by throwing rocks and then attended to the adult woman, the release said. One of the witnesses was a physician and "did not find a pulse," said Kara Van Hoose, spokesperson with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The victim’s identity and cause of death will be released by the Larimer County Coroner.

US woman killed in rare suspected mountain lion attack

A woman has died after a rare suspected mountain lion attack on a hiking trail in Colorado, an incident that would mark the state's first such fatality in decades if confirmed.

Two big cats potentially involved in the suspected New Year's Day mauling were euthanized, state wildlife officials said.

At around 12:15 pm on Thursday, hikers on the Crosier Mountain trail in Larimer County spotted a mountain lion near a person lying on the ground, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) spokeswoman Kara Van Hoose said.

"As they started to get closer, they started to scare the lion from the area by throwing rocks at the animal, and it eventually went away," Van Hoose told reporters. "One of the witnesses is a physician, and did not find a pulse."

Suspected mountain lion attack in Colorado leaves woman dead

A woman was found dead Thursday on a hiking trail in northern Colorado, in what authorities believe to be a rare fatal mountain lion attack.

Hikers on the Crosier Mountain trail in Larimer County spotted a mountain lion near a person lying on the ground around 12:15 p.m., according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The hikers drove the animal away by throwing rocks before finding the victim had no pulse.

“Mountain lion attacks in Colorado are considered to be very rare,” CPW spokesperson Kara Van Hoose said at a news conference. While 28 previous attacks have been reported to CPW since 1990, the last fatal attack was in 1999, the agency said.
