Andrews, 31, who also played for the KZN Sharks and Sale Sharks, could not be revived by emergency services after the alarm was raised at the Atalante-Relais Thalasso hotel on the Île de Ré. A statement from SA Rugby said the lock forward had “passed away tragically” after an accident in which he fell.

“This is terrible and distressing news; our hearts go out to Hyron’s family and the whole Lions rugby community,” said Mark Alexander, president of the South African Rugby Union in a statement released after Andrews’ family had been contacted.

The 22-year-old arrived at the Raiders in 2025 after just two games for the Eels and he was given the task of replacing the departing Jamal Fogarty in the halves.

He’s gone on to play 25 games for the Green Machine and was named Dally M Rookie of the Year for 2026.

He formed a good partnership with Ethan Strange in the halves and Ricky Stuart and recruitment manager Chris Hutchison were keen to tie him down for longer.

The battle to become Canberra's first-choice halfback is set to intensify after the Raiders re-signed Ethan Sanders until the end of 2028.

Sanders was rewarded with a renewed contract after enjoying a breakout year with the Green Machine, where his dazzling kicking game earned him the NRL's Rookie of the Year award.

It comes after the 22-year-old entered the season having played just four first-grade matches and had big shoes to fill as Jamal Fogarty had departed for Manly.

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has inked three-year a contract extension that ties him to the Hawks until the end of 2030.

Mitchell, who was already contracted for next season, has made no secret of his ambition to chase A-grade talent in the quest for a premiership after coaching the Hawks to consecutive finals series.

“Sam’s impact during his first five seasons as senior coach has been profound, and we’re delighted to extend his leadership through to 2030,” said Hawthorn chief executive Ash Klein.

“Having instilled elite standards whilst showing genuine care and connection with his players, Sam has cultivated an environment where every player can reach their full potential. Driven by his innate competitiveness, Sam’s ability to motivate, educate, and inspire our group is first class.

RICHMOND did well to keep pace with Collingwood for three quarters but paid the price for letting down their guard during the second term when it was outscored six goals to one.

The Tigers are still counting the cost of a lengthy injury list but have few excuses for the lack of intensity, with a combined 75 tackles across their past two matches compared to the opposition's 117.

Carlton has turned a nightmare start to the season into an unlikely finals dream as it extended its incredible run since interim coach Josh Fraser took charge to six wins with a victory over West Coast.

Live: Stunning goal from boundary gives Tigers early lead over in-form Blues

Collingwood defender Brayden Maynard could be in trouble after making contact with an umpire during the Magpies' six-point win over the Gold Coast Suns.

The Magpies held on for a 15.14 (104) to 15.8 (98) win over the Suns at Carra Stadium in a contest that had a spiteful end to the first half.

Maynard rushed into a melee after the half-time siren sounded and put his hands on an umpire who was in the middle of the fracas.

The Collingwood defender was seeking Gold Coast's Ben Long, who had hit him in the ribs with a shoulder during another melee just moments before.

Burning questions for Stealth Night at the ‘G

Stealth Night at the ‘G takes centre stage on Saturday night, as Richmond hosts Carlton in a standalone primetime fixture.

Here are some burning questions that could determine the result of the game.

Despite last week’s loss to Collingwood, Richmond was able to control field position for significant portions of the contest.

The Tigers recorded 51 inside-50s, five above their season average, while 49 per cent of the game was played in Richmond’s forward half. Additionally, Adem Yze’s men were the number one team in the AFL last weekend at converting a handball chain from a stoppage into an inside-50.

Westpac and CBA lock horns in institutional banking tussle

Westpac chief executive Anthony Miller wants to restore the lender to a leadership position servicing banking’s top end of town, opening up a new front of competition with arch rivals Commonwealth Bank and ANZ.

Analysts, investors and others familiar with Miller’s strategy say the former Goldman Sachs investment banker has been steadily ramping up Westpac’s lending to big corporates and government clients, partly to offset growing technology costs.

CA ANZ closely monitoring CBA loan fraud investigation

The professional body is not aware of any involvement by its members in the $1 billion home loan fraud at this stage, but has reminded members about their obligations.

The discovery of approximately $1 billion in potentially fraudulent loans by the Commonwealth Bank last month highlights major risks accountants should pay attention to in their own practices, including identity theft and AI misuse, CA ANZ has said in a recent submission to the parliamentary joint committee.

In late February, it was reported that CBA had self-reported to regulators and authorities after uncovering a suspected $1 billion of home loan fraud on its books. The fraudulent loans were obtained using doctored applications and false documents, such as AI-generated fake income statements, according to reports by The Australian Financial Review.
