    STRONGSVILLE, Ohio (WOIO) – Mackenzie Shirilla’s father has been placed on administrative leave following the release of the new Netflix documentary, “The Crash.”

    She was traveling 100 mph and slammed into a brick wall, killing her boyfriend Dominic Russo and their friend Davion Flanagan.

    The new Netflix documentary puts her back into the spotlight after the tragic wreck.

    Her father, Steve Shirilla, has now been placed on administrative leave from his position at Mary Queen of Peace School in Cleveland since its release regarding comments he made.

    According to the school’s website, he is the art and digital media teacher.

    Deadly Ohio crash featured in new Netflix documentary

    A 2022 crash that killed two Cuyahoga County men is the subject of a new documentary on Netflix.

    "The Crash" details events that occurred on July 31, 2022, in Strongsville, a suburb of Cleveland. Dominic Russo, 20, and Davion Flanagan, 19, died in the crash. The driver, MacKenzie Shirilla, is serving a sentence of life in prison without the option for parole for at least 15 years. Her first parole eligibility will be in 2037.

    Shirilla, now 21, is currently housed in the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville.

    According to court records and information presented in the documentary, Shirilla, her boyfriend, Russo, and Flanagan, a mutual friend, were in Shirilla's Toyota Camry in a business park type area of Strongsville.

    The terrifying wreck sent shockwaves throughout a tight-knit community. When emergency responders arrived, they found a mangled mess of metal—with all three people unconscious and two dead on arrival. Shirilla was airlifted to a local hospital, where she underwent multiple surgeries. But as detectives looked further into the case and discovered she had no memory of the tragedy, a new, more haunting question emerged.

    ‘I’m not a monster’: What Mackenzie Shirilla says from prison in Netflix documentary ‘The Crash’

    STRONGSVILLE, Ohio — Mackenzie Shirilla says she did not intend to kill her boyfriend and their friend when she smashed her car into a brick building at 100 mph.

    “I’m not a monster,” she says in the Netflix true-crime documentary “The Crash.” The interview from prison is the first time Shirilla, now 21, has spoken publicly at length since being convicted for the murders Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan.

    “I’m not saying I’m innocent,” she says. “I was a driver of a tragedy, but I’m not a murderer.”

    The documentary revisits the circumstances of July 31, 2022. Shirilla, then 17 and a recent graduate of Strongsville High School, was driving Russo, 20, and Flanagan, 19, home from a party when she turned into the Progress Drive Business Park in Strongsville. One minute later, her Toyota Camry slammed into the building at full acceleration. Prosecutors said Shirilla intentionally caused the crash after her relationship with Russo soured.
