‘Huge role’: Maroons great puts hand up to replace Slater

Queensland great Darius Boyd has put his hand up to take over from Billy Slater next year, but admits it would be a “pressure cooker” role to take on.

Slater took many by surprise last week when he stood down from the Maroons position, having won three of his five State of Origin series in charge.

Since the decision was made, Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston – two of Slater’s long-time teammates who had also assisted him on the staff – have both pulled out of the race, while Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters has done the same.

‘Won’t stand in his way’: Huge reveal in QLD coaching race as Bennett makes shock call

Wayne Bennett has declared he is open to coaching the Queensland Maroons again after several leading contenders to replace Billy Slater ruled themselves out.

Since Slater resigned from the role after an upset loss at home in the decider, a number of possible replacements including Cameron Smith and Kevin Walters announced they were not interested in taking over.

“Obviously, I love Queensland, so if they can’t get a coach, yes, I will consider it,” Bennett said when asked if we would step up.

Lauding "lethal" Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow's freakish speed and talents, Queensland great Greg Inglis is all but resigned to losing his all-time State of Origin try-scoring record to the Hammer.

Inglis needed 32 matches to amass his 18 four-pointers during an illustrious 10-times series-winning Origin career spanning from 2006 to 2018.

Tabuai-Fidow, known as "Hammer", has already nailed 13 tries from 12 games, including one in each match of this year's series that will be decided at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night.

Watch: The moments that prove ‘The Hammer’ is the NRL’s most underrated

When Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow made his way into Maroons camp, fresh off producing a miraculous try-saving tackle on Kurt Capewell, he made a beeline for his Queensland teammate.

“I had a chat to him when we first got in, but there wasn’t too much – I just told him ‘don’t step into me again’,” Tabuai-Fidow laughed.

There is every chance Tabuai-Fidow will end next season as a State of Origin legend, and yet somehow, he’s still viewed as underrated.

Few can match the Maroons strike weapon for speed, with his mentor Matt Bowen famously once saying no one will ever know how fast ‘the Hammer’ is – he is simply as quick as he needs to be in whatever situation.

Carrigan, Nanai back to bolster Maroons for series decider

Billy Slater has made three changes to his Maroons side for the series decider at Suncorp Stadium on July 8.

Pat Carrigan, Jeremiah Nanai and Corey Horsburgh come into the squad while Slater has opted not to pick Roosters forward Lindsay Collins who has entered the 11-day concussion protocol after failing his HIA on Friday night.

Broncos skipper Carrigan played 48 minutes off the bench in Game One of the series before injuring his ankle in the Round 13 loss to the Dragons and missing Game Two in Melbourne.

Carrigan will make his 14th Origin appearance for the Maroons as they look to win the series decider at Suncorp Stadium as they did in 2020 and 2022 before losing to Michael Maguire's Blues side in Game Three, 2024.

Queensland coach Billy Slater has recalled Patrick Carrigan, who has not played a game since May, for State of Origin III as he named his squad for the decider at Lang Park.

Carrigan suffered a syndesmosis ankle injury in round 13 that required surgery, which was supposed to sideline him for six weeks.

He has not returned to the field for the Brisbane Broncos but Slater insisted "he'll be right to play" Game III in nine days' time, marking five-and-a-half weeks since the injury.

"Anyone who knows Pat Carrigan knows he leaves no stone unturned in his preparation, whether he's injured or not," he said.

Victor Radley twist as four players handed Origin debuts after bans overturned

Victor Radley, Addin-Fonua Blake, Casey McLean and Briton Nikora are the first beneficiaries of the State of Origin rule change that allows England and New Zealand players to represent NSW and Queensland from this year. Radley, Fonua-Blake and McLean were all named in Laurie Daley’s Blues squad for Origin 1 on Monday, while Nikora is on the bench in Billy Slater’s Maroons team.

All four are set to make their Origin debuts after they were previously banned from the format under the old rules. Radley has played nine Tests for England, while Fonua-Blake (one), McLean (four) and Nikora (15) have all represented the Kiwis.

Queensland weighing up second-row debutant after eligibility rule change

Cronulla Sharks second-rower Briton Nikora is understood to be under consideration for a Queensland Maroons debut in Game 1 of the 2026 State of Origin series.

Nikora is a New Zealand representative, but has become eligible to represent Queensland in 2026 under eligibility changes made by the NRL and Australian Rugby League Commission.

Under old rules, players who represented other Tier 1 nations – England and New Zealand – were ineligible for Origin, while those played for Tier 2 nations, like Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and Papua New Guinea among others, were considered to be eligible to represent their state.

What hasn't changed is the fact players must be playing rugby league in the state of eligibility by the time they turn 13, or otherwise born in either New South Wales or Queensland.

BREAKING: Massive blow for Maroons as QLD superstar ruled out of Origin opener

Queensland superstar Tom Dearden will miss the State of Origin opener due to a syndesmosis injury, the North Queensland Cowboys have confirmed.

Dearden, Queensland’s incumbent halfback, suffered the injury during Friday’s golden point loss to the Parramatta Eels in Townsville, with the Cowboys confirming he would undergo surgery and miss 6-8 weeks.

The injury rules him out of the first State of Origin game, in Sydney on May 27, while he’s also in doubt for Game II, in Melbourne on June 17.

Injury update: Tom Dearden & Soni Luke

Scans have confirmed North Queensland Toyota Cowboys co-captain Tom Dearden suffered a syndesmosis injury in last night's game against Parramatta.

Dearden will have surgery next week and is set for a 6-8 week recovery period.

Cowboys hooker Soni Luke is also set for a month on the sidelines after scans revealed he sustained a high-grade MCL tear.

Matters of State: Blues and Maroons spine contenders

For the first time in a decade, a Queensland State of Origin team will be named for the April 30 series opener in Newcastle without Ali Brigginshaw.

With a new coach, new captain and new halves pairing, the Maroons are set to begin a new Origin era.

Highly regarded Dragons coach Nathan Cross has taken charge and he will be aiming to reverse last year's series loss with a new playmaking combination following Brigginshaw's Origin retirement and the loss of Tarryn Aiken through injury.

Brigginshaw has been a feature of every Maroons team since 2016, when the fixture was still known as the Interstate Challenge before becoming State of Origin in 2018, and has been captain since 2019.

Man to fill Walsh void as forgotten star earns recall in SEVEN changes: Predicted QLD Team

They may be defending champions, but Billy Slater’s Queensland team for Origin I is set to look very different than the side that clinched the shield last season.

Injuries to Reece Walsh and Ben Hunt have thrown the spine selections into chaos, while the returns of David Fifita and Kalyn Ponga are set to effect some incumbent stars.
