    McDonald’s Pulls Down AI-Generated Holiday Ad After Deluge of Mockery

    Update: McDonald’s has issued a very strange response to the drama.

    Thanks to the rise in popularity of generative AI, mainstream companies like Coca-Cola and Google are jumping on the bandwagon to plop out new advertisements. There’s just one issue: pretty much everybody hates it.

    This year, McDonald’s decided to get in on the corporate slopfest with a 45-second Christmas spot cooked up for its Netherlands division by the ad agency TBWANeboko. The entire thing is AI, and revolves around the thesis that the holiday season is the “most terrible time of the year.”

    Humbug aside, the ad assaults the viewer with rapidly-changing scenes played out in AI’s typically nauseating fashion. Because most videos generated with AI tend to lose continuity after a handful of seconds, short and rapidly-changing scenes have become one of the key tells that the clip you’re watching is AI.

    McDonald's pulls AI-generated Christmas advert following backlash

    McDonald's Netherlands has taken down a Christmas advert made with Artificial Intelligence (AI) following online backlash.

    The 45-second advert was produced with generative AI clips and released publicly on McDonald's Netherlands YouTube channel on 6 December.

    Viewers on social media denounced the use of AI in the film, with one commenter calling it "the most god-awful ad I've seen this year".

    On 9 December McDonald's Netherlands removed the video, adding in a statement to BBC News that the moment served as "an important learning" as the company explored "the effective use of AI".

    The advert was created for McDonald's Netherlands by Dutch company TBWANeboko and US production company The Sweetshop.

    3AW today announced the full-time appointment of recently-retired Geelong AFLW captain, Meg McDonald, who will join the station in 2026 as its new Executive Producer of 3AW Football.

    Ex-AFLW captain Meg McDonald takes helm of 3AW’s FOOTBALL coverage

    In a move that cements her post-playing career, McDonald will begin the job in the new year, taking over from Luca Gonano following his elevation to 3AW’s Head of News and Sport.

    The appointment follows McDonald’s decision to retire after 76 AFLW matches, closing the book on a career in which she captained Geelong for six seasons and became the club’s longest-serving skipper. Her playing achievements include two All-Australian selections and the Geelong Best and Fairest award in 2019.

    Beyond football, McDonald has developed her media credentials through her work with Geelong’s communications team, as well as her recent involvement with 3AW across the 2025 AFL and AFLW seasons. She has also contributed to Fox Footy coverage and was nominated for the AFL leadership program, recognition that underlines her off-field standing.

    It’s not roast beast, but it will have to do. After years of waiting, American fans of brined cucumbers, McDonald’s fries and Dr. Seuss’s curmudgeonly holiday classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas will finally be able to enjoy all three simultaneously when participating Golden Arches franchises start serving Dill Pickle “Grinch Salt” McShaker Fries for the first time on Dec. 2.

    “Sprinkle the tangy, dill pickle seasoning into the McShaker bag and shake for a bold twist on our World Famous Fries that will make your taste buds pucker with delight,” McDonald’s said in a statement. The mean, green fries will be available as part of adult Happy Meals that include either a Big Mac or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, along with a medium drink and “a pair of spirited socks” in “four unhinged colors” that have been “scribbled with messages from the Grinch himself.”

    McDonald's is launching The Grinch Meal, a new meal deal developed in partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises that offers fans of the Golden Arches a mischievous twist on their favorite fast food items this holiday season.

    The Grinch Meal, announced in a press release Thursday, will be hitting the fast food chain nationwide starting Dec. 2, marking the first time this meal will be available in the U.S.

    The new meal is inspired by the popular green Christmas downer and comes with Dill Pickle "Grinch Salt" that can be sprinkled on McDonald's fries using the McShaker bag.
