    Rory McIlroy made three birdies in his last four holes in the second round to make the cut for the weekend at the Australian Open at Royal Melbourne.

    Rory McIlroy said it felt like the final group on a Sunday, while Adam Scott was worried about “taking someone’s head off” as the Australian Open’s impressive crowds at Royal Melbourne were once again in the spotlight on Friday.

    Almost 25,000 fans lined the fairways and the greens to catch a glimpse of the marquee group of McIlroy, Scott and Min Woo Lee.

    They also bunched around the first tee shortly after midday to give the trio the sort of reception a world famous band might receive before going on stage.

    Golf superstar Rory McIlroy has touched down in Melbourne ahead of this week’s Australian Open at Royal Melbourne.

    The reigning US Masters champion arrived in the early hours of Monday morning, with a small entourage and his own security detail.

    The Northern Irishman travelled to Royal Melbourne, where he was expected to walk the course, as part of a tour of the world-renowned sandbelt clubs, on Monday afternoon.

    The reigning US Masters champion made his first appearance for the year at the famous Melbourne Sandbelt ahead of the Australian Open.

    McIlroy toured Kingston Heath, Victoria Golf Club, Commonwealth and Metropolitan before taking a hit at Royal Melbourne.

    The Northern Irishman is the headline act for the Australian Open and is locked into a two-year deal for the competition.

    "He's a genuine superstar of the game and we know people are going to come from everywhere to watch," Golf Australia chief executive James Sutherland said.
