The University of Melbourne has appointed a new vice chancellor to replace Emma Johnston, who died late last year aged 52.

The prestigious institution has poached Griffith University vice chancellor Carolyn Evans to lead the $3.6 billion organisation, which has been helmed by former top federal public servant Glyn Davis on an interim basis since Johnston’s death in December.

The university’s chancellor, Jane Hansen, said the appointment had come after a time “of profound loss and transition” for the state’s most prestigious tertiary institution.

Since 2019, Evans has been vice chancellor of Griffith University, a 44,000-student operation that sprawls over campuses dotted around Brisbane and south-east Queensland.

Central Coast were punished for their slow start against Perth last week, needing to come from two goals down to nab a point.

They didn’t fair any better in their midweek clash against Melbourne City, going down 2-0 again and only being able to grab a late consolation goal through Ali Auglah to make it 2-1.

Melbourne rock the casuals ahead of Round 3 clash

Melbourne has become the first club to embrace the casual clothing trend, with squad members arriving to Sunday's game in their choice of attire.

Latrelle Pickett wore all black, Koltyn Tholstrup rocked boardies, Jake Lever brought a duffle bag, Max Gawn sported a tank top and Ed Langdon brought a bicycle with him.

But it was Changkuoth Jiath's tee and jeans combo which arguably won the pre-game fashion stakes.

The move aligns with Melbourne's strategy of embracing personality and having more fun in 2026, which has been visible in all elements of the footy club from the brand of footy they have played to their social media strategy.

Watson: Melbourne’s innovation will be copied – and so it should

Tim Watson believes Melbourne’s innovation in wearing casual clothes to Sunday’s game against Carlton will be followed by others.

The Demons turned heads when players rocked up to the MCG in casual wear rather than regular club gear.

Watson, who has been advocating for this for some time, loves what the Dees did and reckons others will now follow suit.

“We live in a copycat league,” said Watson on SEN Breakfast.

“It just takes one brave, creative individual or a group to buck the system, innovate and adore for a long-held belief to be shattered.

“Melbourne allowing its players to wear clothes they choose to a game will be followed by a stampede of other clubs.

Melbourne’s widest freeway to close all weekend for North East Link works

The Melbourne freeway closure is part of the North East Link Project (NELP), which needs the freeway clear to install new flyover lanes that will eventually provide entry to and exit from the 6.5-kilometre tunnels currently being bored beneath the north-east.

It’s the latest in a string of weekend closures that have ramped up as the massive infrastructure program pushes toward its 2028 completion.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

If you’re anywhere near the north-east this weekend, the official advice is blunt: avoid the area entirely. Peak-hour delays could stretch to a full hour, and the flow-on effects will ripple across surrounding arterials. Doncaster Road, Tram Road and Manningham Road are all expected to cop significantly heavier volumes than usual, so even if you’re not a freeway user, your local commute could be affected.

Victorian freeway to be closed in both directions this weekend

A major Victorian freeway will be closed in both directions this weekend as infrastructure works intensify.

The Eastern Freeway will be closed in both directions between Bulleen Road and Doncaster Road from 10pm on Friday March 27 to 5am on Monday March 30.

The closure is set to result in major delays of up to 60 minutes, with Transport Victoria advising all drivers to avoid the area and allow extra time.

If driving to the city, Transport Victoria says operators can detour via Doncaster Road, Burke Road and the Bulleen Road citybound entry ramp.

For those driving from the city, detour via Bulleen Road, Manningham Road, Williams Road and return to the freeway via Tram Road Ringwood-bound entry ramp.

First tunnel arch pour complete for North East Link

First tunnel arch pour complete for North East Link! Spark North East Link Tunnels D&C recently completed the first tunnel arch pour with nearly 400m³ of concrete placed over more than 20 hours to form the tunnel’s walls and crown. This arch form is one of the biggest in the world!

From here, the crews working in the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) tunnels in Manningham will continue waterproofing and reinforcement works, having already completed 24,500m² of waterproofing, covering an area bigger than the MCG.

Webuild, as part of the Spark Joint Venture, is delivering North East Link. The project will take 15,000 trucks off local roads every day and reduce travel times by up to 35 minutes for commuters. Once complete, it will be the longest road tunnel in Victoria.

How Melbourne ended up with the biggest comedy festival in the world

"We were kids who weren't trying to do or be anything," the Doug Anthony All Stars' Paul McDermott (centre) says. "It was glorious." (ABC Archives)

Paul McDermott doesn't remember a lot from the first Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) 40 years ago, where he performed as part of the now-legendary musical comedy group, the Doug Anthony All Stars.

He has only vague recollections of the troupe's early ad-lib-heavy shows, like "performing in the middle of Victoria Parade, where the trams go through".

But it'd be hard to forget falling backwards onto a beer bottle mid-gig.

McDermott's memories of the first MICF are hazy because "it was a long time ago and [he's] indulged a lot in the intervening years". (ABC Archives)

It’s taken 40 years, but this comedian finally got her shot at the festival big time

Denise Scott is 70, and she’s been telling jokes for a living for longer than she cares to remember. Or can remember, for that matter.

Asked by fellow stand-up Nath Valvo how many times she had performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival as the pair shared hosting duties for the launch of the 40th edition on Monday, she drew a blank.

“I have no idea,” she said. “I don’t remember any of the titles of the shows. Most of the material is gone, never to be seen again. But, you know, that’s what it’s about – it’s about trying, and never ever giving up.”

The 40th anniversary of the comedy festival billed as the biggest in the world has brought back some memories for comedy legend Denise Scott.

While Scott said she can't remember how many shows she's done at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, or what any of them were called, there is one that sticks in her mind.

It's the time her disapproving mother missed seeing her rendition of the Rage Against The Machine's song Killing In The Name, because the staging collapsed.

In Alastair Clarkson’s view, it has never been harder for bottom teams to climb to flag contention, due to the compromises to the draft, free agency and the bias of gun players towards contenders.

But Clarkson also makes plain that he is responsible for North Melbourne’s performance and that if he cannot lift the Kangaroos back into the finals or thereabouts, then the club is entitled to move him on and find another coach.
