Mitchell Moses ruled out of remainder of World Cup

Kangaroos half Mitchell Moses will miss the remainder of Rugby League World Cup 2026 after sustaining a lower leg injury during the Australian team’s 24-22 victory over New Zealand in the tournament-opening clash at Allianz Stadium on Thursday.

After playing on with the injury for several minutes in the first half, Moses eventually left the field less than two minutes into the second half and was unable to return.

Moses was sent for an MRI scan in Sydney yesterday and has since been diagnosed with a high-grade muscle tear, meaning he will take no further part in the tournament.

Kangaroos Coach Kevin Walters said Moses was understandably disappointed not to be able to contribute for the rest of the campaign.

RLWC LIVE: Moses ruled out of tournament in ‘unfortunate’ Kangaroos blow

PNG got out to an 18-0 lead, but the Cedars have now gone bang-bang to swing the momentum in the shadows of half time.

Abbas Miski burrowed his way over to get his side of the board, before Tony Sukkar — off the back of a brilliant break down the wing from Tony Francis.

He was brought down on the 10m line, but the Cedars still had the overlap and Sukkar scored off the following play.

Meanwhile, the men's leg of this PNG double-header is underway, with the Kumuls taking on Lebanon.

And it's the Kumuls who are on the board first just under 10 minutes into the match after an error from the Cedars led to a long-range try to Gairo Voro.

Huge twist as Panthers star could replace Mitch Moses in World Cup squad

Kevin Walters has indicated that Ethan Strange will come into the Kangaroos' squad of Mitch Moses is ruled out for the rest of the Rugby League World Cup. But NRL commentator Jimmy Smith is urging the coach to go a different direction to address a glaring weakness.

Moses suffered a calf injury and only lasted 41 minutes in Australia's win over New Zealand in Thursday night's opening game. If the injury is significant enough that Moses has to miss the rest of the tournament, Walters is allowed to call a new player into the squad.

Strange is one of three 'fringe' players that Walters named separate to his 23-player squad, along with Panthers winger Tom Jenkins and Dragons forward Hamish Stewart. Strange is a five-eighth (who can also play in the centres), so he'd be a like-for-like replacement for playmaker Moses.

The Kiwis have confirmed star fullback Kalyn Ponga will undergo surgery after suffered a broken arm in New Zealand’s 24-22 loss to the Kangaroos on Thursday night.

Speaking post-match, head coach Stacey Jones revealed the gun No.1 had “played on” for 20 minutes before he left the field in the 70th minute.

According to a statement, Ponga has been “booked in for surgery after breaking the radius in his left arm”, with scans revealing the nation’s worst fears.

Walters confirms Kangaroos shake-up as star’s World Cup could be over

Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters has already locked in several team changes for Australia’s second World Cup game despite a thrilling victory over New Zealand.

Halfback Mitchell Moses suffered a leg injury and lasted only a minute or two into the second half before limping off the field.

He was replaced by Tom Dearden, who Walters later confirmed will wear the No.6 jumper against Fiji next Sunday.

It means Cameron Munster will drop out of the side, as will the injured Moses with Sam Walker already confirmed to make his Kangaroos debut in the No.7.

“(Walker will) play next week. We’ll put him alongside Tom who will play five-eighth,” Walters said after their 24-22 victory in Sydney.

Kevin Walters confirms at least three changes for second Kangaroos clash

Australian Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters has confirmed that James Tedesco, Tom Dearden and Sam Walker will play next week against Fiji.

The Kangaroos, who came from behind to beat New Zealand on Thursday evening in the tournament opener, do have a major health question around Parramatta Eels halfback Mitchell Moses, who Walters hinted could need to be replaced for the rest of the tournament.

“We can bring Ethan in if Mitch is ruled out for the tournament, so we'll see how that goes in the next couple of days,” Walters said during his post-match press conference.

Strange was one of three shadow players named by the green and gold, with Hamish Stewart and Tom Jenkins also part of the wider squad.

Sideline reporter Jelissa Apps said on Channel Seven it was a calf injury.

“Mitch Moses is off & wont return – succumbing to a reported calf issue,” Brien Seeney aka NRL Physio tweeted.

Mitch Moses has doubled down on Parramatta coach Jason Ryles' warning that the speed of the NRL will lead to more players being injured by hip-drop tackles from tired defenders.

Days after the Eels lost a second player to a long-term injury from the illegal tackle, Moses maintained the speed of the game was to blame for the situation.

Scott Sorensen says this teammate must be picked for Origin

Premiership-winning Panthers forward Scott Sorensen is demanding Laurie Daley select unsung teammate and dummy half Mitch Kenny in the NSW Blues team this year.

The extraordinary call comes just days after 28-year-old Kenny was suspended for this Friday’s blockbuster against Melbourne following a hip-drop tackle on Eels fullback Isaiah Iongi last weekend.

Speaking with the Weekender prior to the Good Friday clash at CommBank Stadium, the experienced backrower said the Panthers are going to miss Kenny dearly against the Storm.

“To be honest, I’m actually really glad you asked about him,” Sorensen began.

“I feel like Mitch doesn’t get the praise that he deserves. He has been an absolute warrior for our side for so long. The way he is leading our team at training, the way he is leading our team on the park – he’s taken his game to the next level.”

    Kenny accepts early plea

Penrith Panthers hooker Mitch Kenny has accepted an early guilty plea after being charged by the NRL Match Review Committee following Saturday night’s Round 4 clash against the Parramatta Eels at CommBank Stadium.

Kenny was hit with a grade two dangerous contact charge for an incident involving Eels fullback Isaiah Iongi in the second half of the match.

By taking the early plea, Kenny will serve a one-match suspension, ruling him out of this week's game against the Melbourne Storm.

Moses Itauma's sensational rise continues with Jermaine Franklin KO

MANCHESTER, England — The rise of Moses Itauma continued on Saturday with another sensational knockout, this time in Round Five over American Jermaine Franklin Jr. in Manchester.

Itauma (14-0, 12 KOs) started fast and let his hands go, as he so often does, from the get-go, proving far too quick for Franklin who was boxed in the corner for much of the opening three minutes.

But, the American was tough, taking his fair share of shots but staying on his feet in the opening two rounds and even fired back at Itauma, clipping him a couple of times.

Moses Itauma inflicts first knockout defeat on Jermaine Franklin

Moses Itauma made another emphatic statement as the British heavyweight prospect became the first fighter to stop Jermaine Franklin.

Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte were both taken the distance in points wins in Franklin’s two previous visits to the UK but the durable American was brutally taken out midway through the fifth round by Itauma in Manchester.

Having knocked his opponent down in the third, Itauma closed the show in spectacular fashion a couple of rounds later, following up a punishing left uppercut with a right hand that sent Franklin crashing to the canvas face first.

The referee, Steve Gray, immediately waved off the contest as Itauma bowed to the sold-out Co-op Live Arena crowd after moving to 14-0, which will only amplify calls for the 21-year-old to fight for a world title next.

    Who next for Moses Itauma?

That an article is being published detailing which opponent might follow for Moses Itauma, mere hours before he fights Jermaine Franklin, exhibits the weight of expectation on the young heavyweight's shoulders.

Everyone, and we mean everyone, in the sport of boxing expects 21-year-old Itauma, 13-0 (11 KOs), to get past Franklin and then go on to conquer the division.

However, though a showdown with world champion Oleksandr Usyk is beyond interesting, it would also represent a leap in class of gargantuan proportions. Even a shot at WBO beltholder, Fabio Wardley, should be considered wildly risky at this stage of Itauma's development.
