Newcastle Knights crash live: Young girl critical as car hits grand final gathering, injuring 10

Eyewitnesses have reported the driver of the BMW convertible revved the car before allegedly losing control and crashing into a group of people.

We're hearing more from the fans who lined the roads at Wallsend, hoping to catch a glimpse of their Newcastle Knights heroes as the team bus drove the two hours south to Sydney ahead of Sunday's NRL grand final against the Sydney Roosters.

Knights supporter Carolyn Clark was safely away from the spot where a BMW, driven by a P-plater, allegedly lost control and ploughed into fans, injuring 10.

She said the mood quickly changed when news filtered through about the tragedy.

An 18-year-old P-plate driver has been arrested after crashing into a crowd of Newcastle Knights fans, leaving two people, including a 5-year-old girl, in critical condition.

The incident happened as onlookers waited to farewell the team bus before the NRL grand final.

Officials said in a press conference
this afternoon that 10 people were injured and were all taken to hospital.

A girl aged 5 and a 67-year-old man were in critical condition.

The eight other people remain in stable condition and include a second 5-year-old girl, a 2-year-old girl, two women aged 31 and 63 and four men aged 48, 24, 25 and 57, ABC reported.

ABC has also reported 10 ambulances and three helicopters are treating a number of people at the scene.

Newcastle vs Liverpool predictions: Chris Sutton on Premier League game

I like everything I've seen from new Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle, but he's had the heart ripped out of his team with Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes leaving.

They were two absolute monsters in midfield, who were horrible to play against, but they have gone – and so has the influence of Anthony Gordon and the experience of Kieran Trippier.

It is sad to see. That's not to say Newcastle can't do well now, but I think their fans are realistic about this season and how it will go.

This will be a fascinating game because Liverpool are still adapting to life under Andoni Iraola and have struggled defensively in pre-season. Hopefully they can run for more than half an hour now, too.

Former midfielder Joey Barton has been charged with an assault near a golf club.

Merseyside Police said the 43-year-old, from Widnes, is accused of section 18 wounding with intent, along with a second man, Gary O'Grady, 50, from Huyton.

Emergency services were called at around 9pm on Sunday after a man suffered serious injuries to his face and body near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club.

Barton and O'Grady are due to appear at Wirral Magistrates' Court on Tuesday afternoon.

Earlier, at a High Court hearing on Tuesday over a libel claim involving Barton, Gervase de Wilde, representing former England forward Eni Aluko, said his instructing solicitor had "received a call from a duty solicitor in a police station in Liverpool" shortly before the hearing.

The force said the alleged victim was in a serious but stable condition in hospital being treated for severe injuries to his face and body.

Former footballer Joey Barton and a second suspect have been charged after a man was assaulted near a golf club.

It happened on Sunday at 21:00 GMT in Fairway, near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on Merseyside.

Officers arrived at the scene and found a man with injuries to his face and ribs, Merseyside Police said.
