Ooshies mania keeps pushing Woolies sales
Woolworths has revealed a rise in first quarter sales, building on the momentum provided by a plastic figurine promotion that ran from July to August.
Australia’s biggest supermarket chain has reported another rise in sales since its successful collectable figurine promotion, as it heads into the lucrative Christmas holiday period.
Woolworths, which operates more than 1,000 grocery stores across the nation, posted a 4.7 per cent rise in sales to $19.4 billion for the three months to October 4.
Most of that growth was driven by its home market, where Australian food sales rose by almost seven per cent to $14.8 billion, compared to the same period in the prior financial year.
Woolworths hails price-cutting drive for keeping sales growth on track
Woolworths chief executive Amanda Bardwell says the supermarket’s $100 million-plus investment in price cuts over the past year is paying off, drawing more budget-conscious Australians to the grocery giant and helping it to outperform arch rival Coles.
Cost-of-living pressures are driving demand for cheap proteins such as lean mince, which posted double‑digit sales growth in the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year, Bardwell said, after a trading update showed supermarket sales rose 6.9 per cent over the period.
