Smith ruled out of Adelaide Test on dramatic morning

Usman Khawaja recalled to bat in place of Steve Smith, who is unwell and out of the third Test

Steve Smith has been sensationally ruled out of the third Ashes Test with a recurrence of the superstar batter's inner ear issues sidelining him on Wednesday morning.

Usman Khawaja has been recalled and will bat at No.4 in a dramatic last-minute twist for the home side as a devastated Smith departed Adelaide Oval 20 minutes before the toss, won by Australia who opted to bat first.

Australia XI: Travis Head, Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Josh Inglis, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland

David Warner has backed Usman Khawaja to keep defying Father Time, and does not envy the decision his great mate has left Australia’s selectors to ponder before they name their team for the Boxing Day Test.

Just when it appeared Khawaja’s Test career was over after the veteran left-hander was overlooked for the third Ashes Test in Adelaide, he was tossed a last-minute lifeline to replace Steve Smith, who was forced to withdraw due to vertigo.

Big Brother Australia fans fume over major rule break: 'Completely lost touch'

Big Brother Australia fans were left furious on Thursday when one housemate broke a major rule without repercussion.

Bruce was spotted sunbathing with fellow contestant Coco in the backyard of the house when he managed to sneak in some interaction with the outside world.

Situated in the Dreamworld theme park on the Gold Coast, attendees on the nearby Tail Spin ride shouted out to Bruce as they got a bird's-eye view of the yard.

Despite being forbidden from interacting with the outside world, Bruce broke the major rule as he realised one of the theme park-goers was his brother.

Certain he could hear some familiar voices calling out as the ride swung overhead, Bruce hopped onto one of the sunbeds, shouting: 'It's Jonah! That's my brother!'

Matildas coach Joe Montemurro has called out Australian football's "inferiority complex" in a passionate plea to those involved with the game.

Montemurro says "we put ourselves down for no reason", echoing a sentiment made by former Matildas coach Alen Stajcic.

Montemurro's Matildas face New Zealand in Adelaide on Tuesday night, the team's final friendly before next March's Asian Cup.

Matildas coach Joe Montemurro says Australian football's inferiority complex must end, backing a predecessor's passionate plea for unity.

Montemurro's Matildas host New Zealand in Adelaide on Tuesday night in their last friendly before the Asian Cup next March.

Montemurro: We're building an idea of our football

CommBank Matildas Head Coach Joe Montemurro said that he was focused on emphasising his ideas of football to the group during this international window, not only to help prepare for the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026™, but also to extend those ideas down the Australian football pyramid.

He was talking to the media alongside Ellie Carpenter ahead of Australia's second international friendly against New Zealand on Tuesday evening in Adelaide.

"We've been building an idea of football because we believe it's what we need to go ahead, not just to the Asian Cup, but as a nation, and also as an elite national team," he said.

The Bureau of Meteorology has declared that La Niña is underway in the Pacific Ocean. So, what does this mean for Australia’s weather this summer?

La Niña is one phase of a Pacific Ocean phenomenon called the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The other phases of ENSO are El Niño and neutral.

Bureau of Meteorology officially declares La Niña, Aussies warned 'get your home ready'

Nearly two months after La Niña was first declared in the United States, Australia's Bureau of Meteorology has finally confirmed the wet weather system is underway in the Pacific Ocean.

Meteorologists confirmed this week that the weather event, which can bring above-average rainfall, but described the system as "relatively weak".

In a relief for many Australians, the Bureau expects La Niñato be "short-lived". In more good news, the Indian Ocean Dipole, which has brought wet weather to Australia, is expected to return to neutral in December.

Nonetheless, the NSW State Emergency Service issued a warning after widespread damage caused by storms across the state. Destructive 120 k/h winds caused significant damage to homes, powerlines and trees/

BoM drops long-range forecast promising extreme summer

After one of the wettest winters on record, The Bureau of Meteorology has revealed its long-range summer forecast — and it’s extreme.

BOM released a statement, predicting key trends of the weather leading up to Christmas and into next year.

“The summer forecast currently shows that rainfall is likely to be below average for large parts of Western Australia. Above, below or near-average rainfall are all possible outcomes for the south,” the statement said.

A key takeaway was that summer temperatures are going to be hotter than normal.

“Summer days and nights are likely to be warmer than usual throughout most of Western Australia,” BOM said.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery review – Josh O’Connor excels in another deadpan delight

Daniel Craig is joined by a sparkling array of talent including O’Connor, Glenn Close and Josh Brolin in this latest murder mystery with a religious undercurrent

Rian Johnson’s delectable new Knives Out film is a chocolate box: mouthwateringly delicious on the first layer and … well, perfectly tasty on the second. Daniel Craig returns as private detective Benoit Blanc, in a slightly more serious mode than before, with not as many droll suth’n phrases and quirky faux-naif mannerisms, but rocking a longer hairstyle and handsomely tailored three-piece suit.

Blanc arrives at a Catholic church in upstate New York to investigate the sensational murder of its presiding priest, Monsignor Jefferson Wicks, a ferocious clerical alpha male played by Josh Brolin, thundering his reactionary views from the pulpit. (That “Monsignor” title can only be bestowed by the pope incidentally: presumably Benedict XVI or John Paul II, not milksop liberals like Francis or Leo XIV.) And prime suspect is the sweet-natured, thoughtful junior priest Father Jud Duplenticy, amusingly played by Josh O’Connor, who was upset by the Monsignor’s heartless attitudes and was caught on video threatening to cut him out of the church like a cancer. Atheist Blanc faces off with the young priest, a worldview culture-clash which leads to an extraordinary encounter with the Resurrection itself.

Wake Up Dead Man review: Benoit Blanc's third Knives Out mystery is engrossing, and very funny

Agatha Christie wrote dozens of Hercule Poirot mysteries. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote over 60 Sherlock Holmes adventures. Rian Johnson, meanwhile, is on only his third Benoit Blanc whodunnit. But give it time. On the strength of Wake Up Dead Man, it feels like he and Daniel Craig’s Blanc could be solving murders for years to come.

Completing an unofficial trilogy, the filmmaker and star have pulled off one of the most consistent and rewarding cinematic triptychs in recent memory, each entry arriving at a singular mood, while maintaining, at its centre, its loquacious recurring hero, the “mere passive obser-vuh of the truth”.
