    Mining giant Fortescue has kicked off legal proceedings over what it claims are defects in the pipeline connecting the Canning Basin to its multibillion-dollar Iron Bridge magnetite project in WA’s Pilbara region.

    However, the company maintains the issues relating to the faulty pipes have not impacted the major magnetite project and its production guidance remains unchanged.

    The Andrew Forrest-led company is one of three plaintiffs heading legal action filed in the WA Supreme Court this week seeking damages from faulty pipes.

    Iron Bridge is owned under a joint venture between FMG Magnetite and Formosa Steel.

    Concerns are mounting about an ocean phenomenon known as a Kelvin wave that could raise sea levels along the California coastline by up to a foot, as scientists say El Niño is supercharging the threat of storm surges and flooding in the coming months.

    As an incredibly strong El Niño continues to develop in the Pacific, the phenomenon brings with it a strange shift in the ocean. The Kelvin wave phenomenon is created when trade winds that usually blow from South America towards Asia die down or reverse in El Niño years, setting off a massive, slow-moving slosh of water.

    The upcoming El Niño season is forecasted to bring high sea levels and potentially powerful winter storms to Southern California, but another component of that natural phenomena is also headed to the region.

    A Kelvin wave is currently moving along the coast of Mexico, and it's expected to reach California by next month.

    Kelvin waves originate far away in the Western Equatorial Pacific Ocean. They're a foundational component of what drives El Niño and the massive amount of warming happening in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific.

    Kelvin waves form when trade winds weaken. When those winds stop blowing, which typically happens every 4-7 years, warm water that accumulates in the ocean starts moving back toward California and South America.

    Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir said he believes the outcome of the Lachie Neale case should have come earlier.

    Neale was handed a reprieve from a one-match ban to allow him to play in Saturday's AFL grand final.

    Neale and the Brisbane Lions will look to claim their third premiership in a row when they take on the Dockers.

    Brisbane coach Chris Fagan doubted Lachie Neale would be cleared for the AFL grand final, as his "cynical" Fremantle counterpart Justin Longmuir took umbrage with the lengthy process.

    Lachie Neale is free to play in the grand final after the AFL appeals board sensationally handed him a fine, overturning a one-match suspension on Thursday night.

    The board of chairman Richard Loveridge and members Wayne Henwood and Stephen Jurica found that the AFL tribunal should have used the exemplary and compelling circumstances exception to reduce Neale’s one-game ban for gut-punching Jack Ginnivan.

    They instead gave him a $10,000 fine after the AFL was denied the opportunity to introduce new evidence in the hearing – vision taken during a trial of an optical data tracking trial by Champion Data.

    Loveridge said the board only wanted to consider the evidence that the tribunal originally considered.

    All BYD Shark 6s sold in Australia are being recalled for a manufacturing defect, with owners asked to remove their spare wheels until the recall work can be carried out.

    BYD Australia is recalling 32,009 examples of the popular Shark 6 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ute as their spare wheel could detach.

    "For involved vehicles, BYD has identified that in certain circumstances incorrect installation of the spare wheel, incorrect positioning of the spare wheel tray or insufficient fastening torque may cause abnormal wear of the spare wheel support cable," the company said in a statement.

    "Continued movement and friction during vehicle operation may cause the cable to fail, resulting in spare wheel detachment. This may create a hazard to other road users and potentially cause serious injury or death."

    BYD Shark 6 owners urged to remove spare wheel

    BYD Australia has issued a safety recall for 32,009 examples of its Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute after identifying a defect that could cause the spare wheel to detach from the vehicle while in motion. The recall affects all Shark 6 variants sold locally, with owners advised to remove their spare wheel until the issue has been rectified.

    According to BYD, the recall has been triggered by a potential issue involving the Shark 6's spare wheel mounting system.

    The company says incorrect installation of the spare wheel, incorrect positioning of the spare wheel tray or insufficient fastening torque may cause abnormal wear of the spare wheel support cable.

    BYD is recalling 32,009 examples of its Shark 6 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) dual-cab ute in Australia due to the potential abnormal wear of the spare wheel assembly.

    This recall affects BYD Shark 6 examples produced between August 29, 2024 and June 15, 2026.

    BYD has clarified that this recall doesn't relate to all Shark 6 examples and only certain examples.

    "For involved vehicles, BYD has identified that in certain circumstances incorrect installation of the spare wheel, incorrect positioning of the spare wheel tray or insufficient fastening torque may cause abnormal wear of the spare wheel support cable," said BYD Australia in its recall notice.
