    Communities across large parts of Australia have been urged to take precautions as temperatures begin to soar ahead of severe and extreme heatwave conditions, with parts of western Sydney expected to reach the low 40s by Saturday.

    The Bureau of Meteorology has issued heatwave warnings in New South Wales, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, with an extreme warning in place on the NSW south coast – indicating the highest level of risk.

    Today is forecast to be the coldest December 1 in Melbourne since 1996, with a maximum of 15 degrees Celsius predicted.

    Melburnians are shivering through what is forecast to be the coldest summer day in nearly 30 years, while there is snow in Victoria's Alpine region as a cold snap hits the state.

    The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said maximum temperatures across Victoria today would be 8 to 12 degrees Celsius below the December average.

    Duty forecaster Michael Ephron said today's high of 15C would be Melbourne's coldest start to summer since 1996, and it would feel colder thanks to the wind chill.

    Heavy rain forecast for parts of Queensland after two rescued from floodwaters

    Thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast for small parts of Queensland after two people were rescued from floodwaters on Saturday. 

    Swiftwater rescue crews retrieved two people from vehicles stuck in floodwaters in separate incidents near Beaudesert, while the State Emergency Service responded to more than 130 calls for help.

    On the Sunshine Coast, Kenilworth was hit with 65 millimetres of rain in 30 minutes on Saturday, while Kooralbyn, on the Scenic Rim, recorded an overnight total of 136 millimetres.

    Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) senior forecaster Lauren Murphy said a rain band extending from the state's north-west to south-east would bring patchy rain and showers, with the potential for severe storms to return.

    Much of northern and eastern Australia faces a risk of severe thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon and evening, with millions of people potentially in the firing line.

    “It’s another severe thunderstorm outbreak for eastern parts of the country. It could be an active one,” said Angus Hines, senior meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology on Saturday.

    The warning comes after storms swept over south-east Queensland on Friday, with the ABC reporting that more than 11,000 homes lost power after late afternoon and evening storms.
