Cox Plate hero may go again
The spring may not yet be over for Saturday’s brilliant Cox Plate winner, Cosmic Crusader, with breeder-owner Bob Peters revealing he may run his three-time Group 1 winner in the G1 Champions Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on November 7.
Much like the iron horses of the 1980s and 90s – such as Super Impose, Vo Rogue, Better Loosen Up, Sydeston and Naturalism – Cosmic Crusader appears to be thriving on being in work and going to the races. If he is to contest the Champions Stakes, it would be his eighth start this prep.
“I’m not ruling it out. I’ll see how he comes through yesterday’s run and make a decision from there,” Peters told Racing.com on Sunday.

As trainer Andrea Leek, who operates stables in Nar Nar Goon North, celebrated becoming the first woman in 32 years to win Australia’s weight-for-age championship with West Australian star Cosmic Crusader, the dual Brownlow winner and his Carlton crew were left to wonder what might have been.

Andrea Leek almost had the perfect day. The only thing missing as she celebrated becoming the first woman to train the winner of the Cox Plate in 32 years, and the first at Flemington, was her husband by her side.
John Leek Jr was at a friend’s house, cheering from the couch as his wife’s horse Cosmic Crusader defied the firepower of the country’s biggest stables.
He was unable to walk through Flemington’s famous gates, having been rubbed out of racing and banned from all tracks for three years in August on a charge of attempting to stomach tube a horse.
