UK police vow speedy decision over Andrew-Epstein trade documents

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has not spoken publicly since the latest Epstein files were released. (Reuters: Toby Melville)

British police say they are "making progress as quickly as possible" on whether to launch a full investigation into allegations that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor had shared confidential trade documents with late financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Thames Valley Police said it held discussions with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) about allegations of misconduct in public office relating to documents recently released by the US Department of Justice.

Among the latest tranche of files released in the US, emails suggested Mr Mountbatten-Windsor, King Charles' younger brother, shared official British trade documents with Epstein in 2010, after the financier's conviction for child sex crimes.

King 'ready to support' police as they assess Andrew claims over Epstein

King Charles has made his first intervention in the latest round of revelations in the Epstein scandal, saying Buckingham Palace is ready to support the police as they consider allegations against his brother Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

"The King has made clear, in words and through unprecedented actions, his profound concern at allegations which continue to come to light in respect of Mr Mountbatten-Windsor's conduct," a Palace spokesman said.

"While the specific claims in question are for Mr Mountbatten-Windsor to address, if we are approached by Thames Valley Police we stand ready to support them as you would expect," he said.

Thames Valley Police confirmed it is assessing whether there are grounds to investigate a complaint by the anti-monarchy group Republic, which reported Mountbatten-Windsor for suspected misconduct in public office and breach of official secrets.

What really happened at Winter Olympics opening ceremony? What you didn't see on TV

MILAN — The Mona Lisa. People dressed as coffee makers. Mariah Carey. Fun cheers. Heavy boos.

It’s a fact the Olympic opening ceremony is a made-for-TV extravaganza, meant to wow a global audience from start to finish.

But it’s just as spectacular in person, and even better, allows you to catch things you likely didn’t see on the broadcast. Luckily, USA TODAY Sports caught it all from the site of the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony, capturing the live action art displayed throughout the night.

Even though the opening ceremony began at 2 p.m. ET on Friday, Feb. 6, the festivities started 30 minutes before inside Milano San Siro Olympic Stadium with a preshow DJ and hosts teaching the crowd dances for the show. The crowd did its own thing, giving off a classic European soccer vibe in a stadium known for it.

Some were already detonated prior to being found, and some have been detonated by police, but no one has been injured.

Members of the public are being urged to call Triple Zero (000) if they find an item resembling the devices, and to avoid touching it.

Police in Canberra say they have found 11 explosive devices lying next to footpaths in the city's north-west in the past two days.

Police warn of pipe bombs found in Belconnen

ACT Policing is warning the community of dangerous pipe bombs which have been located on public paths in Belconnen this week.

In the last two days, police responded to reports of several pipe bombs that were located within the vicinity of Lake Ginninderra between Joynton Smith Drive and Ginninderra Drive in Belconnen.

ACT Policing is urging anyone who locates a suspicious item within the area not to touch it and immediately contact police on Triple Zero (000).

Anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour is urged to contact police on 131 444.

While there is no information or reports to suggest that these pipe bombs are currently in other parts of Canberra, police are urging any Canberrans to report suspicious items that match the description of a pipe bomb to police.

Nearly a dozen pipe bombs, some of them already detonated, have been found on footpaths and in parks in the nation’s capital, sparking a major police investigation and warnings not to touch the potentially explosive items.

ACT police Det Acting Insp Anna Wronski could not say where the pipe bombs came from or who was behind them, but said the matter was being taken extremely seriously.

“We do not want members of the public to pick them up. We do not want members of the public to bring them to police stations. We want them to call triple-zero immediately,” Wronski told reporters on Thursday.
