Hundreds of Qantas ground crew workers are striking across five major airports, with regional flights and freight operations facing potential disruptions.

Qantas ground crew workers are holding a 24-hour strike, triggering potential disruptions to regional flights and freight operations.

Hundreds of Qantas ground staff are taking industrial action on Wednesday across Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth airports.

The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) said workers were demanding fair pay in line with industry standards, more full-time jobs and hours, and improved workplace safety.

The union claims workers were split across three companies under former Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce, who led the airline from 2008 to 2023, to drive down wages and conditions.

Why Qantas Quietly Killed Its Nonstop Perth-London Flight In 2026

On March 25 2018, the Australian flag carrier Qantas wrote aviation history by becoming the first airline to commence direct non-stop flights between Australia and Europe with a route from Perth International Airport(PER) to London Heathrow Airport (LHR). This historic event marked the first time travelers between Europe and Oceania could fly without a stopover or transfer.

It also meant that all the world's inhabited continents were connected by a non-stop flight in one form or another. On the roughly 17-hour flights, which operated under the flight numbers QF9 and QF10, Qantas deployed a 236-seat Boeing 787-9

Since the route stretches over 9,000 miles (14.484 km), the aircraft type's capabilities are pushed to an extreme as Boeing officially lists the 787-9s range at 8,705 miles (14.010 km). Unsurprisingly, this comes with necessary weight restrictions, explaining why Qantas seats only 236 passengers on board an aircraft marketed to seat 290 guests.

Planning a trip to Japan? Air India to start 1st-ever non-stop flights between Delhi and Osaka from February

Japan's famed “Golden Route”—a cultural and culinary trail encompassing Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka—came with one big hurdle for Indian travellers: having to backtrack hundreds of miles to Tokyo just to catch a flight home.

However, to address this logistical hurdle, Air India has announced it will launch the first-ever nonstop flights between New Delhi and Osaka’s Kansai International Airport starting early next year.

Operating four times a week, starting 2 February 2027, the new route will make Air India the sole carrier connecting New Delhi directly to Japan’s second-largest metropolitan area.

Osaka will become the airline's second Japanese destination after Tokyo (Haneda), where it currently operates daily flights from Delhi and four-weekly flights from Mumbai.

Do not count on using a Qantas lounge pass if you are flying domestic Jetstar out of Perth. I arrived on an international flight and had a few hours to kill before my connecting flight to Melbourne. Since Jetstar is part of the Qantas Group, the system allowed me to digitally link my complimentary Qantas lounge pass to my Jetstar flight number without any issues. However, once you get past security, you quickly find out there is no Qantas lounge in Terminal 2, where Jetstar flights depart from. All the Qantas lounges are located on the opposite side of the airfield at Terminal 4. It requires a 15-minute shuttle bus ride to get between the two terminals, making it completely impractical to use the lounge during a transit. Qantas’ system shouldn’t let passengers link a lounge pass to a flight departing from a terminal where a lounge doesn’t exist. Thanks for nothing, Qantas.Michael Gruschel, South Yarra, Vic

He has coeliac disease, an autoimmune condition requiring him to have a gluten-free diet, and he feared he would have to endure the entire journey with nothing to eat.

Qantas requires at least 24 hours' notice if passengers need a special meal, like gluten-free, vegan, or halal.

When Kyle realised his mistake at the airport, he made a beeline for the Qantas service desk, but staff said they were unsure if anything could be done.

Commonwealth Bank is pushing customers to spend their credit card rewards with Virgin’s Velocity scheme instead of Qantas Frequent Flyer points, as part of a dramatic overhaul of its loyalty program.

On Tuesday, the bank announced the changes to its reward points program, which will also include the launch of a new inhouse “Yello” points currency, ahead of an October ban imposed by the Reserve Bank on the credit card surcharges that have funded generous perks to date.

Under the new scheme, customers wanting to convert Yello points to airline points will get more generous rates when exchanging them for Virgin Velocity points than Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

Alan Joyce: Qantas survived COVID because of my decisions

Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce has claimed responsibility for the airline’s survival, three years after a series of customer-service outages and operational failures infuriated the public.

Joyce acknowledged the airline’s dismal post-COVID recovery experience, a chaotic period marked by skyrocketing fares and illegal sackings, in comments broadcast on 60 Minutes. Joyce stepped away from the role two months early in 2023 amid political and consumer backlash.

Qantas’s new ultra long-distance aircraft has landed on Australian soil for the first time on Friday after a 19-hour test flight from France.

The Airbus A350-1000ULR, designed for Qantas to complete some of the longest commercial flights in the world, set off on a nonstop journey from Airbus’ manufacturing facility Toulouse, France on Thursday, destined for Melbourne.

The planes have been designed to fly up to 22 hours nonstop for the company’s Sydney to London direct route, expected to start in October 2027.

Qantas’ new ultra-long-haul Project Sunrise plane has officially landed in Australia for the first time after completing a historic 20-hour test flight.

The specially built A350-1000ULR aircraft, which is set to deliver the airline’s first non-stop Sydney to London flights from late 2027, embarked on the 17,000km flight from Toulouse to Melbourne on Friday.

By about five hours into the flight I’ve watched a movie, had a meal and now I’m getting restless and checking the flight map, and we’re not even halfway. The last four hours are torture.
