On verge of qualifying for leaderboards, Wheeler eyes more K's in Miami

PHILADELPHIA — Zack Wheeler is putting up some remarkable numbers this season — even by his lofty standards.

The biggest number to watch when he starts Monday night's series opener against the Marlins, though: Seven.

That's how many innings Wheeler needs to pitch to officially qualify for leaderboards for the first time this season. Now, even if he does that, Wheeler's name would appear only temporarily on those lists.

After all, pitchers need to average one inning per team game to qualify. Wheeler has pitched 100 innings this season, while Monday marks the Phillies' 107th game.

In other words, Wheeler will likely bounce on and off the leaderboards for stats such as WHIP and ERA over the next couple of weeks, but if all goes well, he'll stick as a qualified starter by September. Wheeler's numbers have ranked among the league's best all season, but his name has been noticeably absent given his delayed start coming off thoracic outlet surgery in September.

Phillies vs. Marlins Predictions, Picks & Odds as Zack Wheeler Takes the Mound for Philly

Home / Phillies Vs Marlins Predictions Picks Odds As Zack Wheeler Takes The Mound For Philly

An NL East matchup is featured on Monday’s MLB slate as the Miami Marlins (52-54) host the Philadelphia Phillies (57-49) for the start of a three-game series at loanDepot park in South Florida. This marks the third of four regular-season meetings between the division rivals, with Philadelphia holding a 5-2 advantage in the season series.

The Phillies have lost three consecutive series since returning from the All-Star break, and the issues that led to the firing of former manager Rob Thomson following the team’s 9-19 start are beginning to resurface. The bullpen has struggled, the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation has been atrocious, and the offense has been far too inconsistent, relying too heavily on the home run for its success. Philadelphia is, however, coming off an 11-4 win over the New York Yankees in Sunday’s series finale that snapped a four-game losing streak, and the Phillies are hoping that victory helps pull them out of their recent funk.

Bernard Tomic stood tall as Australian hopefuls suffered a sorry start on the opening day of French Open qualifying with four of the five players in action beaten.

It looked as if it would be a wipeout when Tomic, the last of the quintet in action at Roland Garros, lost Monday's first set to seeded Tunisian veteran Moez Echargui.

Pierre Gasly: “I think we are all disappointed by the end result today and we certainly expected much more. It has been a challenging weekend so far with limited running at times and the car has not felt as good as it did in pre-season testing so it is important for us to understand why that is and find some improvements quickly. In terms of my laps in Qualifying, I felt like I was on the limit and I was pleased with my speed and application on each push lap. Of course, we are managing some big changes this year with tyre preparation and energy management and there are still so many things we need to learn. It is not the way we wanted to begin the year and there are more cars in front of us than we would like. We have the race tomorrow, which does have a lot of uncertainties going into it. We know the start will be important and I am focused on doing everything I can tomorrow to improve today’s result and see what we can come away with.”

Ugochukwu feeling confident ahead of Qualifying after going fastest in Melbourne Practice

QUALIFYING: Nael beats Ugochukwu to pole as Campos seal Melbourne 1-2

Ugo Ugochukwu says he knows what he has to do to take pole in Melbourne, with the Campos Racing driver feeling confident about his chances after a good Free Practice session.

The American driver’s 1:34.607 was the fastest time by a good margin, with Rodin Motorsport’s Brando Badoer his closest rival, 0.427s behind.

For Ugochukwu, it was a positive start to the weekend, but speaking after stepping out of a debrief with Campos, he says the aim is all about taking this form forward to Qualifying.

“I’m feeling good of course,” said Ugochukwu. “It's a good start. I was feeling really good out on track, the car was feeling good, so I think we're in quite a good place going into Qualifying.

Ugochukwu and Mini fast in F2 and F3

Ugo Ugochukwu and Gabriele Mini have led the opening practice sessions of Formula 3 and 2, respectively as the Aussies find their feet.

F3 started Friday’s action with Ugochukwu carrying on his momentum from New Zealand and being well clear of the field.

Ugochukwu was the only driver to record a 1m34s time in the one-hour session with his 1:34.607 four tenths clear of Brando Badoer and Noah Stromsted.

James Wharton in his return to Prema was the leading Aussie in 17th place, being a second off the pace.

After a strong debut season last year, Wharton hopes to take a step forward after moving from ART.

Ugochukwu leads first FIA F3 practice of 2026 in Melbourne

Ugo Ugochukwu set the pace in practice ahead of the first round of the 2026 FIA Formula 3 championship.

The Campos Racing driver was 0.427 seconds quicker than Brando Badoer, while the next five drivers were all separated by less than a tenth of a second.

Practice was brought to an end five minutes early after flames appeared from the back of Mattia Colnaghi’s car and he came to a stop on track.

The majority of the session ran relatively incident free. A few drivers suffered lock-ups and trips over the grass, including Patrick Heuzenroeder, who is deputising for the injured Ernesto Rivera in Melbourne, but all were able to continue without problems.

Ugochukwu feeling confident ahead of Qualifying after going fastest in Melbourne Practice

After 180 days, Formula 3 racing is back with Round 1 of the 2026 campaign set to get underway at the Albert Park street circuit in Melbourne.

30 drivers come into the year all with their eyes on winning the ultimate prize at the end of the season, and they will have desires on starting the campaign well Down Under.

So here is a rundown of everything you need to know, from session times to TV information and much more as we get set to go racing once again.

The four leading F1 prospects on the 2026 F2 grid

Formula 2 is verging on becoming an absolute necessity for any Formula 1 graduate, as it’s been nine years since a driver (Lance Stroll) has stepped up without racing in F2 (or the GP2 series it absorbed).

Every F2 season since its 2017 rebranding has featured a future F1 driver, so the question is – who is that graduate(s) on the 2026 F2 grid?

Below, we’ve picked out the key drivers to watch among the 22-driver field ahead of its season-opener alongside F1 in Melbourne this weekend.

The obvious starting point is the driver who has walked away from a frontrunning IndyCar career to earn the F1 superlicence points he needs to make his long-chased F1 dream, which has already had multiple setbacks, a reality.
