Aussie residents sound alarm after 'concerning' backyard discovery in broad daylight

Abnormal wildlife behaviour is being reported in backyards across the South Coast of NSW, sparking concern across affected communities.

Shoalhaven Bat Clinic has documented flying foxes seeking food on the ground, including from the shrivelled branches of chopped-down cumquat trees.

Rescuer Trista Thorpe told Yahoo News the ordinarily nocturnal creatures have also been seen underneath mulberry trees during the day, rather than returning to roost in their camps.

The clinic's investigations into the phenomenon began on September 26, after they received multiple calls from concerned residents.

For the last week of September, the clinic responded to over 70 bats, and the problem appears to be worsening.

Home | Updates | Singapore Competition Regulator takes action against Fake‑Review Provider and Businesses

The Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore took enforcement action against a fake‑review provider and businesses that purchased fake online reviews.

On 30 September 2026 the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCS) issued a media release announcing enforcement action against a provider of fake‑review services and 45 businesses that procured such reviews.

The provider was identified as Julian Tung Yan Kai, sole director of Reputifly Pte. Ltd. and operator of the websites BuyReviewSG and GetReviewSG. CCS said the provider supplied fake‑review services to approximately 100 businesses from on or before 2023. According to CCS, the provider used generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to create reviews that varied in style and incorporated Singapore‑specific details, offered a rating calculator to help clients achieve desired Google ratings, and operated an online dashboard for generating, managing and tracking fake reviews. Reviewers were recruited via Telegram channels, paid to post the content, and instructed to avoid duplicate reviews; the provider also offered to replace up to 30 percent of reviews removed by platforms.

A 13-metre long humpback whale carcass has been removed from City Beach after washing up early on Monday.

The $100,000 operation involved a 72-tonne crane to hoist the decomposing mammal onto a truck, which has left the beach on its way to a landfill site in Perth's north-east.

Residents near the Red Hill landfill site have been notified they may notice "temporary odours", which are set to dissipate once the burial is complete.

A huge humpback whale that washed up at Perth’s City Beach on Monday has finally been removed from the shoreline, more than three days after attracting large crowds – and circling sharks.

Beachgoers warned of prolonged closures after whale removed

Users of City Beach have been warned of prolonged beach closures even after the removal of a 31-tonne whale carcass.

The 13-metre carcass, believed to be a female about 20 years old, was removed from South City Beach on Wednesday after being discovered on the beach early Monday morning.

A Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter report recorded a 5m white shark just 10m offshore from the City Beach BEN sign at 8.05am on Tuesday, while a 4m white shark was spotted about 30m offshore at 3.28pm.

At time of writing, there was no confirmed timeline for when the beaches will reopen to the public.

Whale carcass finally removed from City Beach

A humpback whale carcass that washed up on the shores of City Beach on Monday morning has now been removed, although the beach remains closed to the public until further notice to protect swimmers from shark activity in the area.

The 13-metre whale was discovered early Monday morning and began attracting sharks close to shore, with some identified as great white sharks at more than five metres long.

A large crane hired by the Town of Cambridge was on site on Thursday morning to assist with the removal of the deceased whale, which weighed 31 tonnes.

The crane was used after an excavator brought in on Wednesday was unable to safely lift the carcass.

WA aged care residents to get free RSV vaccine after worst ever flu season

Free RSV vaccines will be offered to older Western Australians in residential aged care. ( ABC News: Brendan Esposito)

After a horror flu season last year, free RSV vaccinations are being rolled out for the first time for older Western Australians living in residential aged care.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a highly contagious illness that can cause a severe infection in older adults and babies.

Mothers and babies were already entitled to free RSV vaccinations, and on Thursday the state government expanded the program to include those aged 65 and older living in residential aged care.

It feels like every year we're told this is one of the worst flu seasons on record. But this time around, doctors really mean it.

WA aged care homes to get 15,000 free vital vaccines

Around 15,000 free doses of the RSV vaccine are set to be rolled out at WA aged-care homes ahead of winter.

For the first time vaccines for the respiratory syncytial virus will be free for those 65 and over in residential aged care homes through a $2.6 million State-first program.

It mirrors a program introduced last year where the vaccine – which currently costs around $300 to buy – was free for infants and people over 28 weeks pregnant, others considered the most vulnerable in society.

According to the Government, less than one per cent of people over 60 received the vaccine last year.

But about 25 per cent of people over 65 who contracted RSV in 2025 ended up in hospital.

Government Finally Acts on Free RSV Vaccines After Sustained Pressure from the Opposition

Shadow Minister for Aged Care and Member for Warren-Blackwood Bevan Eatts MLA has welcomed the Government’s decision to provide free RSV immunisation for older Western Australians in residential aged care is a welcome step — and one the Opposition has been calling for months.

Mr Eatts said the announcement shows that persistent, practical advocacy can deliver real outcomes for seniors.

“This is a win for common sense — and for the many families and healthcare workers who have raised this issue with me,” Mr Eatts said.

“We have consistently called on the Government to fund free RSV vaccinations for older Western Australians, and today’s announcement shows that when you keep the pressure on and put forward practical solutions, the Government is forced to listen.”

Residents slam 'selfish' Australia Day act at popular public beach: 'Council should stop it'

Another public holiday has rolled around for Australians. With it comes the controversial practice of reserving prime vanatage points ahead of council-planned celebrations.

On New Year's Eve, Yahoo News reported on the outrage that rippled through Manly when revellers used cabanas to claim their spot on the wharf foreshore before the city's firework display.

Now, ahead of Australia Day festivities in the Sutherland Shire, the debate has been reignited at Cronulla, with dozens of people using picnic blankets in the same way.

By 8am on Monday, one resident urged the community to "get down here early if you want a good spot", despite the show commencing at 4pm.

Cronulla beach clear of seaweed in good start to Australia Day in the shire

It was a good start to Australia Day at Cronulla beach, with the seaweed clearing overnight.

Big seas have returned, washing the thick weed, which has been present for several days, out to sea.

Surf conditions at Cronulla were mild, but bigger waves were rolling in at other Bate Bay beaches.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecast waves along the Sydney coast of one to two metres.

"Surf conditions in the early morning may be more powerful than they appear," the bureau said.

Forecast strong winds will be monitored by organisers of the planned fireworks at the end of Cronulla concert.
