WA Bushfire: West River and Fitzgerald residents urged to still be alert as warning downgraded

A fire in West River and Fitzgerald has been downgraded after residents were earlier urged to leave their homes as the large uncontrolled bushfire moved north-west rapidly.

Sparked in a paddock about 1.10pm on Wednesday, the blaze resulted in an emergency warning for those in the area bounded by West River Road, Old Ongerup Road and Fitzgerald Road in Fitzgerald and West River in the Shire of Ravensthorpe.

The warning was downgraded an advice level just before 7pm, however, residents were still warned to stay alert.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services say the blaze has been contained but is not yet under control.

As fire raced up seven high-rise towers in Hong Kong's Tai Po district, resident Ng was in a state of disbelief.

Her husband called her to say the buildings were on fire, but since the fire alarm had not gone off, she was unsure.

For curiosity's sake, she decided to go to the ground floor and look for herself.

She witnessed an inferno as fire quickly spread from one building to another.

"I came down and didn't bring anything, just wearing this outfit," she told the ABC.

Hong Kong investigators are piecing together how the city’s worst fire in decades rapidly raged through seven high-rise buildings on Wednesday, leaving at least 94 people dead, dozens injured and scores missing.

As fires smouldered in several apartment blocks at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex on Friday, firefighters continued searching for residents unaccounted for. Extreme heat was hampering rescue efforts, officials said.

Rescue operations inside the Hong Kong apartment complex that was engulfed by fire on Wednesday are “almost complete”, fire officials have said, as the death toll reached 94 early on Friday with scores more missing.

Firefighters were combing though through the high-rises on Friday, attempting to find anyone alive after the massive fire that spread to seven of eight towers, in one of the city’s deadliest ever blazes.

Throughout the morning more families arrived at the Kwong Fuk Estate community centre, adjacent to Wang Fuk Court, to identify the bodies being pulled from the gutted buildings. Few names of the dead have been released to the public yet.

Darwin residents assess the damage as TC Fina moves out to sea

Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina has passed Darwin at category three strength, with the weather system's gale-force winds leaving a path of destruction as it continues west into the ocean.

Fina was the Northern Territory's strongest cyclone to pass Darwin since the deadly Cyclone Tracy in 1974.

The system was also more powerful than Cyclone Marcus, which passed Darwin as a category two in 2018.

Follow our live blog to keep up-to-date on Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina.

Now tracking west-south-west, Severe TC Fina is picking up strength over the Timor Sea and is expected to move over the top of Western Australia in the coming days.

Residents urged to ‘take action’ as cyclone approaches WA

Kimberley residents have been urged to prepare to take shelter as a category four tropical cyclone inches closer to WA.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina was 125km offshore and heading southwest as of 3pm on Sunday, with a cyclone watch and act now in place for those in Cambridge Gulf and King George River.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services warned there is a possible threat to lives and homes as the cyclone approaches the area.

“You need to take action and get ready to shelter from a cyclone,” the warning read.

“No matter how many cyclones you have been through, a severe cyclone can be overwhelming. If you plan to shelter at home, make sure you and your family are physically and mentally prepared.”

Residents told to ‘act now’ as thunderstorms hit WA

A storm advice has been issued to West Aussies urging residents to act now to stay safe.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued the alert just before 11am on Wednesday, advising people in Northam, Dowerin, Gingin, Wongan Hills, Armadale and Beverley to prepare now.

“You need to act now and stay safe with severe weather forecast including damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall from late this morning, persisting through the afternoon,” the alert stated.

The wind “may cause damage to homes and property”, and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services is warning locals to secure and tie down outdoor furniture, trampolines and other loose items around your home that could be picked up and thrown by strong winds.
