Satellite images expose potential trouble behind Microsoft's $5 billion AI spending shortfall

Microsoft spent $5 billion less than expected on AI last quarter, and satellite images may show why.

In Microsoft's quarterly earnings call last month, chief financial officer Amy Hood said delays by third-party cloud providers contributed to lower-than-expected AI infrastructure spending. Microsoft cut its annual capital expenditure forecast by $5 billion.

The news sent neocloud stocks tumbling, highlighting concerns that the young companies can't deliver on their multibillion-dollar promises.

Although Microsoft didn't name names, two data center projects from neoclouds Iren and Nebius could be responsible, according to satellite analysis from research firm Aterio.

In Texas, IREN is building four data centers under a $9.7 billion deal with Microsoft. An October 21 satellite flyover found that one of the buildings, Horizon 4, was still missing backup power generators and cooling equipment — and risked missing its scheduled delivery by the end of the year, Aterio said.

AI buildout hits snag as Google and Microsoft put off raising capex forecasts

The past few quarters of hyperscaler earnings have been marked by ever-increasing capital expenditure forecasts as tech giants race to build out artificial intelligence infrastructure to meet what they describe as insatiable demand.

At least for the moment, Microsoft and Alphabet are telling a slightly different story.

In their earnings reports Wednesday, both companies shared capex figures that came up shy of analysts' estimates. Microsoft reduced its capex forecast for the year to $170 billion from $175 billion, and Alphabet held its guidance at $195 billion to $205 billion.

The numbers suggest a slowdown is nowhere in sight, but they do represent another potential point of concern for the AI buildout. Shares of neoclouds CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN all dropped after the reports, as did Oracle, which is one of the biggest spenders on AI infrastructure.

SpaceX Starlink satellite suffers mysterious ‘anomaly’ in orbit

Elon Musk’s space Internet company said this satellite, which appears to have blown to pieces, did not appear to pose a risk to the ISS or the upcoming NASA moon mission

One of Elon Musk’s Starlink Internet satellites suffered an “anomaly” on Sunday while in orbit around Earth, the company said in a social media post. The incident appears to have created some debris, with fragments likely to fall to Earth over the next few weeks, according to LeoLabs, a company that monitors satellites in low-Earth orbit.

The satellite lost communication at about 560 kilometers above Earth, Starlink said. While the statement from Starlink, which is a subsidiary of Musk’s rocket company SpaceX, merely noted that investigations are ongoing, LeoLabs said its radar observations of the event indicated an “internal energetic source” as the likely cause rather than a collision. SpaceX and LeoLabs did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

An anomaly led to loss of contact with the satellite and "the release of a small number of trackable low relative velocity objects."

One of SpaceX's Starlink broadband internet satellites suffered an anomaly in orbit on Wednesday (Dec. 17) and is now plunging toward Earth.

The mishap led to a loss of communication with the Starlink spacecraft, which was orbiting at an altitude of 260 miles (418 kilometers), according to the company.

In addition, "the anomaly led to venting of the propulsion tank, a rapid decay in semi-major axis by about 4 km [2.5 miles], and the release of a small number of trackable low relative velocity objects," representatives of Starlink, a company that's owned by SpaceX, said in an X post on Thursday morning (Dec. 18). That description suggests that the Starlink satellite's propulsion tank may have ruptured or suffered some other type of damage.

Starlink satellite explodes, causing small debris field in space

A debris field comprised of a Starlink satellite's remains is floating through space, after a minor explosion broke off pieces of the tech and sent them tumbling around Earth's orbit.

Space X reported the anomaly earlier this week, which the company said resulted in trackable debris that included the satellite's propulsion tank and the largely intact satellite body, which is still in orbit. SpaceX says the satellite, which the company says isn't close enough to the International Space Station (ISS) to pose a risk to astronauts, will reenter the atmosphere and reach its "demise" in the next week.

"As the world’s largest satellite constellation operator, we are deeply committed to space safety. We take these events seriously. Our engineers are rapidly working to root cause and mitigate the source of the anomaly and are already in the process of deploying software to our vehicles that increases protections against this type of event," wrote SpaceX.
