The ‘queen of romantic comedy’ has died 18 months after announcing her brain cancer diagnosis

Madeleine Wickham, known for writing the bestselling novel Confessions of a Shopaholic under her pen name Sophie Kinsella, has died aged 55.

Wickham, dubbed “the queen of romantic comedy” by novelist Jojo Moyes, wrote more than 30 books for adults, children and teenagers, which have sold more than 45m copies.

New ‘Stargate’ TV Series Ordered at Amazon From ‘Blindspot’ Creator Martin Gero

Amazon is officially moving forward with a new “Stargate” TV series, Variety has learned.

The new project hails from Martin Gero, who began his career in the original “Stargate” TV franchise. Exact plot details for the series are being kept under wraps. The series will be produced by Amazon MGM Studios and air on Prime Video.

“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on ‘Stargate: Atlantis,'” Gero said. “I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, ‘Stargate’ taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA. I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”

‘Stargate’ Reopens With New Series at Prime Video

Martin Gero, a writer and producer on previous entries in the franchise, will be the showrunner.

The Amazon-owned streamer has ordered a new series in the beloved sci-fi franchise. The show, titled Stargate, comes from Amazon MGM Studios (which owns rights to the franchise) and creator and showrunner Martin Gero, who has worked as a writer and producer on the three previous live-action Stargate shows.

“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series. Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA,” Gero said in a statement. “I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. ‘Stargate’ TV Series From Martin Gero Based On Sci-Fi Franchise Ordered By Amazon

Amazon MGM Studios has greenlighted another series based on popular MGM IP, giving a series order to Stargate for Prime Video. The new installment in the classic sci-fi franchise comes from Martin Gero, a Stargate veteran and veteran showrunner who created NBC’s Blindspot.

Stargate was among the first MGM titles identified for series or film adaptations following Amazon’s $8.5B acquisition of the storied Hollywood studio in 2022. The series pickup follows series orders for Elle, a Legally Blonde prequel series from the film franchise’s star Reese Witherspoon; Tomb Raider, headlined by Sophie Turner; and Barbershop, starring Jermaine Fowler, based on the MGM movies. Other series, such as Poltergeist, are in development.

Last Samurai Standing, a Netflix series launching Thursday, is set in a Japan where the feudal samurai era is about to end.

The hero, Saga Kokushu, played by Junichi Okada, is one of dozens of samurai in a live-or-die survival game to save family, community and honor.

‘Last Samurai Standing’ Review: Netflix’s Fusion of ‘Squid Game’ and ‘Shogun’ Doesn’t Soar, but It Satisfies

Junichi Okada stars, produces and did the action choreography on this six-part series about a nefarious game pitting samurai against each other in 19th-century Japan.

The press notes for Netflix‘s new action drama Last Samurai Standing are careful to mention that the series “has been in development since 2022, a vision that predates even the development of Squid Game.” I assume that’s a typo, since Squid Game premiered on Netflix in 2021. But the exact phrasing and even the actual truth are close to irrelevant.

Whether Last Samurai Standing was put into development before Squid Game became a global sensation and FX’s Shōgun emerged as an awards juggernaut truly doesn’t matter — because every critic and every viewer is going to call the series Squid Game meets Shōgun, a comparison that isn’t an accusation of theft so much as a very, very accurate description of narrative similarity. Under what circumstances is being Squid Game meets Shōgun anything other than a boon?

Season 2 & 3 for Netflix’s Massive Japanese Show With 100% RT Score Teased

Netflix’s new Japanese hit, Last Samurai Standing’s creator, Michihito Fujii, has now teased plans for Season 2 and 3, fueling fan excitement for the series that has already got a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Last Samurai Standing creator Michihito Fujii opened up about his vision for the show beyond its bloody first season in an interview with ScreenRant. When asked how many seasons he would need to tell the full story, Fujii said, “Two or three seasons.”

However, the director also showed a keen awareness of the realities of modern streaming, where long gaps between seasons can cause viewers to lose the thread of a narrative. This practical concern influenced his approach to the initial batch of episodes.
