    Sharks v Knights: Byers steps in; Dibb's Newcastle return

    Cronulla Sharks host Newcastle Knights to kick off the much-anticipated 2026 NRLW season on Thursday night at Ocean Protect Stadium.

    With plenty of player movement since last season – most notably Knights halfback Jesse Southwell joining the Broncos – Round 1 will be the first proper look at where teams have landed. 

    The Sharks are looking strong with reigning Dally M Prop of the Year Ellie Johnston and Caitlan Johnston-Green forming a fearsome combination in the front row alongside fellow Jillaroo Quincy Dodd at hooker. 

    For the Sharks, this is a chance to begin the campaign with authority at home, particularly after promising signs from halfback Chantay Kiria-Ratu in a trial against the Roosters.

    Newcastle have started life without Jesse Southwell in victorious fashion, grinding past Cronulla 18-4 in a heated start to the NRLW season.

    After their star playmaker departed to Brisbane in one of the biggest off-season moves, questions were raised on how the Knights would fare after making last year's preliminary final.

    They shrugged off their doubters at Ocean Protect Stadium on Thursday, running in three tries to one to get their season up and running.

    Cross-code star shines on NRLW debut as Knights win season opener

    Knights recruit Sidney Taylor, one of the many women who crossed from rugby sevens to the NRLW this year, had a stellar debut as Newcastle defeated Cronulla 18-4 in the first game of the season on Thursday night.

    The former Australian rugby sevens star had a huge impact at right centre, churning out a match-high 183 run metres from 16 carries and setting up a try as Newcastle took down Cronulla at Shark Park.

    Shanice Parker chalked up the first try of the season – and Taylor set it up.

    The 23-year-old scooted onto a Kirra Dibb cut-out ball, hit the accelerator, drew Sharks winger Cassie Staples to create an overlap, and dished off the ball to Parker, who dived and scored in the 10th minute.

    Sharks v Wests Tigers: McInnes to start; Turuva to fullback

    After scoring more than 30 points – and still losing – the Sharks will be hoping to tighten their defence when they host a high-flying Wests Tigers.

    Cronulla were out-pointed 46-34 in a high-scoring shootout in Townsville against the Cowboys last week with KL Iro scoring a hat-trick in a losing cause.

    Coming up against a Wests Tigers outfit that have the second best defensive record in the league, Cronulla coach Craig Fitzgibbon will be hoping his charges are committed to the cause in what shapes as a tough encounter.

    Wests Tigers bounced back from a one-point loss to Brisbane in Round 7 to post a strong 33-14 win over last year's minor premiers the Raiders, highlighted by a Adam Doueihi double.

    The Wests Tigers have confirmed their final squad ahead of their clash with the Cronulla Sharks at Ocean Protect Stadium in Round 9 of the NRL Telstra Premiership. 

    Coming off the back of a convincing 33-14 ANZAC Round victory over the Raiders at Leichhardt Oval, the Tigers are sitting in third place on the competition ladder ahead of their trip to Cronulla. 

    There has been one change to the starting team, with Tino Tavana starting on the wing in place of Jeral Skelton. Patrick Herbert has been omitted from the squad.

    It's a huge afternoon of NRL action at Shark Park as Cronulla look to get back to winning way. But doing so against the high-flying Wests Tigers will be a difficult task on Sunday.

    Wests have produced the best first eight rounds in club history to be sitting in third on the NRL ladder heading into this round. However, the issues may be coming as it was announced this week that star man Jarome Luai would be leaving to head to the PNG Chiefs. Whether that upsets the momentum for Benji Marshall's side remains to be seen, but you'd suspect it won't. The Tigers overcame the loss of Luai to injury a few weeks ago, with Jock Madden taking his place with aplomb and produced some of their best performances of the year in that period.
