Leaked documents show Australia's richest company quietly shelved plans to go green

Mining giant BHP quietly shelved billions of dollars of green projects despite promising the public it was committed to cutting emissions, and telling its board climate action was "urgent" and any delays would "risk" its reputation.

Hundreds of pages of internal BHP documents, exclusively leaked to Four Corners and Guardian Australia, reveal how the company sought to publicly position itself as a climate leader while internally finding reasons to put off action.

The documents focus on BHP's iron ore operations in the Pilbara, which made $US14.4 billion ($22 billion) in pre-tax profits last financial year, are the backbone of the company and helped make BHP the world's largest miner. Those WA mines account for more than a third of its Australian emissions.

The world’s biggest miner has halted or delayed projects to cut vast amounts of emissions and has quietly war-gamed options to push major climate investments in its Western Australian iron ore operations into the next two decades, internal documents show.

An exclusive investigation based on documents leaked to the Guardian and the ABC’s Four Corners can reveal that BHP, one of Australia’s biggest historic emitters, has dumped plans for a facility that could have significantly reduced emissions and has put on ice renewable projects designed to power its iron ore operations in the vast, resource-rich Pilbara region.

After her beloved I’m A Celebrity show was axed, Julia Morris is a winner again

Proof that the world works in mysterious ways came on Friday night when just hours after news broke that she had lost her show with Channel Ten’s axing of I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!, Julia Morris was a winner at a charity gala in Melbourne.

OK, it was an $810 bedding package from Linen House that she won in a prize draw, but after Ten’s announcement that it had dumped the long-running reality show that Morris had helmed for 12 years, any win is worth celebrating.

“I lost my job today,” she responded from her seat when her name in the prize draw was called out by Channel Seven’s Rebecca Maddern, before jokingly putting it to guests: “Now, does anyone want to buy some linen?”

David Letterman returns to 'Late Show,' slams CBS for Colbert cancellation

David Letterman returned to his former home, the Ed Sullivan Theater, on Thursday, May 14, to appear as one of the final guests on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," before the show concludes on May 21.

"I came very close to being teary about that," Letterman, 79, told Colbert, 62, of his emotional return, before quickly throwing in a jab at CBS. "You know what happened backstage? I'm standing [there]. A guy comes over, and he says he's from CBS, and then he fired me."

Later in the show, Letterman and Colbert channeled their rage at Colbert's cancellation in a zany segment that saw the TV hosts hurl several pieces of furniture off the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theater. A bullseye in the shape of CBS' logo was used as their target.

Colbert and Letterman Launch Pieces of ‘Late Show’ Set Off Ed Sullivan Theater Onto CBS Logo Ahead of Show’s Final Week

Letterman's appearance on the series arrived exactly one week before Colbert's final show on May 21.

One week ahead of the final episode of The Late Show, David Letterman joined Stephen Colbert to commend the end of the late night series.

To really commemorate the occasion, the hosts made their way to the top of the Ed Sullivan Theater where they threw off a few pieces of set furniture onto none other than CBS‘ eyemark logo.

“I thought maybe tonight’s occasion would be a little sad, being the end of your run here, but this brings true joy to my heart,” Letterman said. “We are up here for the wanton destruction of CBS property.”

Stephen Colbert and David Letterman throwing CBS furniture off the roof is glorious viewing

Stephen Colbert's Late Show is coming to an end next week, and David Letterman wasted no time helping him clear the place out.

In the clip above the two Late Show hosts stand on the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theater with some stolen talk show chairs, Colbert's Eames desk chair, and a few bonus melons, launching them over the edge at a giant CBS logo far below.

Needless to say it's extremely entertaining viewing, as is Letterman's final message to CBS: "Good night and good luck, motherf***ers."

Victorian schools: VCE subjects show a clear public-private school divide

Government schools are offering students more VCE subjects than some of the state’s most costly private institutions, while select-entry and high-fee independent schools show lower ratios of subjects-to-students.

A new analysis of enrolment data by this masthead reveals nine of the state’s top 10 schools for subject choice are in the government sector, with the government’s Virtual Schools Victoria offering 99 subjects to VCE students in 2025 – the most statewide. Mildura Senior College offered 86 subjects, which was equal second with Templestowe College.

Victorian Association of State Secondary Principals president Belinda Hudak, who was principal of the Mildura school until January, said catering only to students in years 11 and 12 allows the college to concentrate teacher resources and offer a wide range of subjects.

The Best Sci-Fi Show No One Watched, Can Now Be Streamed For Free

The internet was used to release “webisodes,” micro-budget television shows put together by determined artists. One of the best was Sanctuary, an eight-episode sci-fi series out of Canada.

SyFy was so impressed that it purchased the rights and made a television series out of it that ran for four seasons, from 2008 to 2011. Today, every episode is available to stream on either Pluto or Tubi, with no subscription fee and no additional charge. Great news, as the show was the first of its kind to be filmed entirely on a green screen.

Sanctuary starred Stargate-SG1‘s Amanda Tapping as Dr. Helen Magnus, the head of the Sanctuary network that provides a safe haven for Abnormals, mythical beings including mermaids, Bigfoot, and plenty of original creations for the show. Joining Tapping were Robin Dunne as Dr. Will Zimmerman, Emilie Ullerup as Ashley Magnus (Helen’s daughter), Ryan Robbins as Henry the lycanthrope tech genius, and Christopher Heyerdahl as Big Foot and also John Druitt, though he was known by the name “Jack” for part of the 19th century.

Bad Bunny and the most-streamed Latin artists ignite Spotify’s anniversary celebration

Spotify celebrates 20 years by publishing a historic ranking that confirms Latin music as the heart of global consumption.

Bad Bunny leads this milestone, cementing his status as the first Latin artist in history to dominate the platform’s metrics and rewrite the rules of the game.

Figures like J Balvin and Karol G on the global top list validate that the urban genre and Latin American musical identity serve as pillars of the current industry.

Two decades have passed since Spotify revolutionized how we listen to music. To celebrate its twentieth anniversary, the platform unveiled a historic list, a recount of the artists who define the streaming era. In this pantheon of titans, which includes names like Taylor Swift and Drake, the most vibrant news remains the absolute breakout of Latin talent. The celebration pays homage to the past; it celebrates the definitive conquest of a Spanish-speaking market.

Mortgage rates show signs of falling after Iran war peak

Major mortgage lenders are making "meaningful" cuts to the rates on new deals, bringing some solace to first-time buyers hit by the economic impact of the Iran war.

Money markets are reacting to hopes of a long-term truce in the war so the recent rapid rise in borrowing costs has halted and is now starting to reverse.

Experts say there is some momentum in mortgage rate reductions, but the situation remains delicate with borrowers still exposed to the possibility of sudden shifts in mortgage costs.

First-time buyers say the change is a relief although the cost of buying a home remains painfully expensive for many at a time when other bills have risen.

‘Meaningful relief for borrowers’ as banks prepare to cut mortgage rates

Santander is reducing mortgage rates being offered to borrowers with smaller deposits from Thursday, raising hopes that similar changes will be made more widely across the market.

The bank said it is able to pass on a reduction in borrowing costs following a fall in swap rates, which are used by lenders to price mortgages.

Meanwhile, TSB is also poised to reduce some of its mortgage rates from Friday.

Looking at Santander’s reductions, they include reducing two-year fixed first-time buyer deals for people with deposits of 5% to 15% by up to 0.28 percentage points.

Selected 5% to 15% deposit five-year fixed first-time buyer rates will reduce by up to 0.17 percentage points.

It’s no show without punch: Australia’s Supergirl soars in new trailer

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime.

Australian actress Milly Alcock soars out of the new Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow trailer in full flight, a high-kicking, fast-running action heroine who may yet turn the highly anticipated Superman spin-off into the action blockbuster of the year.

This is a high-octane reboot of the Supergirl character, who has, for much of her comic book history, been a well-behaved simulacrum of her higher-profile cousin. For local audiences, it’s a double whammy: in addition to Alcock, the film’s director Craig Gillespie is also an Aussie.

We have met Supergirl before: back in the 1984 movie, played by Helen Slater, and in the recent TV series (2015-2021), played by Melissa Benoist. Alcock’s Supergirl also made a cameo appearance in Superman (2025), but this is the time we’ve seen her in detail.

Supergirl trailer is a battle to save the life of the DC Universe's cutest character

Never get between a girl and her super-dog. If you saw Superman and found yourself on its ultra-comic-booky wavelength, chances are you were enamoured with Krypto – Clark Kent’s unruly pooch, who delivered several seriously satisfying smackdowns in James Gunn’s DCU-starter. And, as that film revealed in its final moments, it’s not even Clark’s dog; it belongs to his boozed-up cousin Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl (Milly Alcock), who’s feeling less than super since she saw her planet blow up, killing her entire family and all its people with it. Now, in Supergirl – the second DCU film, this time directed by I, Tonya’s Craig Gillespie – Kara takes centre stage, going on a vengeful quest; and Krypto’s life is on the line.
