If you were around in the 1990s, chances are you watched ABC’s groundbreaking reality documentary series Race Around The World.
It ran for two seasons from 1997 and was a massive cult hit — and it had a seismic effect on young, impressionable, uni student me.
When it debuted, I was halfway through my second year of an arts degree, and like most of my fellow undergrads, I had absolutely no idea what I’d end up doing. Strangely, I couldn’t think of many jobs that would utilise my studies in 1960s American ghetto politics (yes, this was a real unit I took, and yes, I cringe in second-hand embarrassment).

The rules are simple: six filmmakers (William, Mikaela, Jayden, Elliot, Kate and Lucinda) travel solo through 10 different countries and deliver a new short film (2.5 minutes to 4 minutes in length) every 10 days, over a period of 100 days. Working entirely alone, they shoot, write, edit and produce each film from start to finish, before sharing it with a live studio audience back home.
Zan Rowe hosts the series, with John Safran serving as the lead judge in each episode, joined in the live studio recording by two industry pros.
Each filmmaker, from wherever they are in the world, will introduce their film, before the three judges review, rank, and score their work.
