Smith ruled out of Adelaide Test on dramatic morning

Usman Khawaja recalled to bat in place of Steve Smith, who is unwell and out of the third Test

Steve Smith has been sensationally ruled out of the third Ashes Test with a recurrence of the superstar batter's inner ear issues sidelining him on Wednesday morning.

Usman Khawaja has been recalled and will bat at No.4 in a dramatic last-minute twist for the home side as a devastated Smith departed Adelaide Oval 20 minutes before the toss, won by Australia who opted to bat first.

Australia XI: Travis Head, Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Josh Inglis, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland

David Warner has backed Usman Khawaja to keep defying Father Time, and does not envy the decision his great mate has left Australia’s selectors to ponder before they name their team for the Boxing Day Test.

Just when it appeared Khawaja’s Test career was over after the veteran left-hander was overlooked for the third Ashes Test in Adelaide, he was tossed a last-minute lifeline to replace Steve Smith, who was forced to withdraw due to vertigo.

Robin Smith, former England cricketer, dies aged 62

The former England cricketer Robin Smith has died at the age of 62, with his family and former county Hampshire saying they were devastated by his loss.

Smith played 62 Tests and 71 one-day internationals for England between 1988 and 1996 and was a resolute middle-order bulwark for the side during often difficult times for the team. He particularly excelled against pace, making his highest Test score of 175 against the fearsome West Indies attack at Antigua in 1994.

He made 4,236 Test runs overall at an average of 43.67, including nine centuries.

The Durban-born Smith, known as “The Judge”, also captained Hampshire from 1998 to 2002, having helped them win the Benson & Hedges Cup in 1988 and 1992, and the NatWest Trophy in 1991.

'A fearless hero for hapless England' – Robin Smith obituary

Robin Smith, who has died at the age of 62, was one of the finest players of fast bowling during an era when the England team were often viewed as a national joke.

Smith, moustache bristling, bravely taking on the terrifying West Indies pace attack or battling it out against the unrelenting Australians, was a familiar sight for England supporters for nearly a decade.

His signature shot, an immensely powerful square cut, made him a feared opponent and earned him admirers around the world.

Loyal to his friends as well as being respected by his opponents, his biggest battles ultimately came after retirement, and his off-field struggles with mental health and alcoholism were laid bare in his later years.

Vernon Philander says South Africa have a 'massive chance' of winning against India (1:47)

Former South Africa batters Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis have placed the onus on their current Test batters to give India a fight in the forthcoming two-Test series starting November 14. While Amla was of the view the bowling attacks of both teams are "pretty close," Smith said South Africa's top-three batters have to step up. Amla went on to say that the presence of some inexperienced batters in their line-up could turn out to be a blessing for the visitors as they won't be carrying the "baggage" of previous tours, given South Africa haven't won a Test in India since 2010 and a series since 2000.
