Split Enz deliver energy and vividness – and the songs weren’t bad either

Here came the six-piece band of four originals – the brothers Finn, Noel Crombie and Eddie Rayner – and two excellent junior blow-ins in bassist James Milne and drummer Matt Eccles, all suitably dressed in Crombie-designed loud checks, vivid patterns and wide stripes.

The senior men may be well aged, but they were not going quietly, peeling off Shark Attack, which still feels like a teenage frenzy done by arthouse punks, History Never Repeats, a synth pop song that forgot to get rid of guitars, and Poor Boy, ostensibly a straight pop song but one that can’t hide its oddness. Biff. Bang. Pow! What a cracking opening of energy and vividness, and the songs weren’t bad at all, were they?

'We were weird': Tim Finn on Split Enz's rise

Split Enz's latest line-up features Neil and Tim Finn, Eddie Rayner, Noel Crombie, James Milne and Matt Eccles. (Supplied: Karen Inderbitzen-Waller)

It's 1972 and two shy but gifted 20-year-old New Zealanders have locked themselves away with their guitars and a strong creative impulse.

"We wrote two songs in one night in this little flat we shared in Auckland, and they were gold to us," Tim Finn, one of those young men, tells Double J's Karen Leng.

Tim Finn joins Karen Leng on Double J to talk about getting Split Enz back together, reuniting for their first Australian shows in over 15 years.

Always one step ahead, the new wave innovators are not done yet – and their hair is bigger than ever

Many things can kill you in the music business. For Split Enz, New Zealand’s first internationally successful rock group, the most lethal poison was hairspray – or it should have been. “How did I not die?” marvels bandleader Tim Finn, whose head – at its vertiginous peak – resembled an upturned paintbrush.

Sitting next to him, percussionist Noel Crombie grins as Finn continues the story. “Noel would lacquer merciless amounts of this toxic spray … the makeup would start to run but the hair would just somehow … sit there.”

After all these decades, Split Enz still has the magic

Split Enz’s Stuff and Nonsense is among my favourite songs. But it is the song of a young man, a 27-year-old Tim Finn.

“I can give you the present, I don’t know ‘bout the future. That’s all stuff and nonsense.”

The lyrics reveal a man uncertain of himself and of what will happen next. It is a song of nervousness about where things will end up. Listening to the song now on Spotify, and you hear the fear in Tim Finn’s vocals.

Forty-seven years later, and on stage in real life, he has lived that life. Split Enz ended, Tim went solo, his little brother’s band Crowded House went global, and he is now approaching the other end of an illustrious career in music.

Ashley Harkleroad’s husband files for divorce from tennis star turned Playboy model

Longtime tennis couple Ashley Harkleroad and Chuck Adams are divorcing after 16 years of marriage, according to TMZ.

Adams, 54, filed for a legal separation from Harkleroad, 40, on April 14, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split, per court documents.

Adams is seeking joint custody of their two kids — son, Charlie, 17, a 6-foot guard in the class of 2028, and daughter, Cissy, 15, a Fila-sponsored tennis player — with physical custody going to Harkleroad and Adams getting visitation.

He requested to terminate the court’s ability to award spousal support to Harkleroad.

Adams also requested to amend his divorce petition after he gets his current assets and debts sorted out.

Ashley Harkleroad is dealing with a major development in her personal life after more than a decade of marriage.

According to court records, her husband, Chuck Adams, filed for separation on April 14, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple, who married in 2009, share two children, ages 17 and 15. Adams is seeking joint custody, with physical custody going to Harkleroad, along with visitation rights. He has also requested that the court terminate any potential spousal support.

The split comes after a long relationship rooted in tennis. Adams competed professionally in the 1990s before later coaching, including working closely with Harkleroad during her career.

Harkleroad, who turned pro at just 15, quickly rose through the ranks. She reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 39 in 2003, a breakout season that included a strong run in Charleston, where she knocked off multiple top-20 players. That performance helped establish her as one of the rising names in American tennis at the time.
