The Boroughs review – this witty, star-packed monster show could have been made by Spielberg

A retirement village Scooby gang of heroes take on a horrific creature in a series that is funny, tender, wise – and executive produced by the Duffer Brothers

I’m sure this isn’t the intended takeaway from The Boroughs, a supernatural murder-mystery set in a New Mexico retirement community, but I am transfixed by what is on offer to the ageing demographic across the pond. It’s like watching an episode of The White Lotus and vowing in your next life to come back as an affluent white American, but more realistic. God willing, we’ll all get old – and with a bit of careful planning, maybe we could stretch to a berth in one of the villages that a country with the space to house them provides for a reasonable sum?

What to stream this week: Bill Pullman’s retiree thriller, plus five more picks

This week’s picks in include a supernatural series from the creators of Stranger Things, a For All Mankind spin-off, a delightful documentary about comedian Martin Short and a fitting end to a true-crime documentary.

The boomers are more than OK in The Boroughs, an enjoyably upbeat supernatural adventure where the ageing residents of an American retirement village have to band together to fight off their various adversaries. Whether it’s a society that wants to park them out of the way or spindly creatures that make nocturnal brain fluid raids, these retirees are up against it. Let’s be clear: nobody puts nanna in the corner.

Breaking Down the Hopeful Ending of Netflix's New Sci-Fi Mystery Series The Boroughs

(L-R): Clarke Peters as Art, Alfre Woodard as Judy, Alfred Molina as Sam, Denis O'Hare as Wally, and Geena Davis as Renee in The Boroughs.

In the picturesque desert retirement community known as the Boroughs, things certainly aren't what they seem. For one thing, there are monsters in the walls. For another, the unnervingly upbeat owners keep up a Stepford-esque facade. So when recently widowed new resident Sam (Alfred Molina) discovers his friend Jack (Bill Pullman) has been killed by a mysterious, alien-like creature feeding on his brain fluid at night, it's up to Sam and a ragtag group of fellow seniors to figure out what's actually afoot in the New Mexico town they call home.

30 Rock star Grizz Chapman dies aged 52 after kidney issues

Grizz Chapman, known for his role in 30 Rock, has died at age 52 after a series of health issues.

The actor passed away on Friday local time, his representative confirmed to TMZ, which first reported the news.

His manager, Renee Glicker, also spoke to the outlet, telling them the actor was "just struggling to stay alive" as he faced a number of medical conditions.

The comedy star was in need of another kidney transplant after his first one back in 2010, but due to his height of two metres and 13 cm, it was hard to find a match.

Though his cause of death has not been confirmed yet, Glicker told the outlet she believed there were "a number of contributing factors" towards it.

A few weeks before Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker hit cinemas, the franchise unveiled the faces of its next generation: an immovable helmet, and a doe-eyed green puppet.

The Mandalorian was Star Wars' first live action television series, with its titular helmeted hero and his tiny charge hunting bounties and monsters in a show that owed as much to Saturday morning cartoons as Clint Eastwood Westerns.

It also borrowed heavily from two of The Empire Strikes Back's most popular characters — bounty hunter Boba Fett and Yoda — but gave them a new spin as father and son, deepening the lore of the Mandalorian people and baby-fying its powerful Force user.

Sydney Roosters utility Connor Watson is set to join the PNG Chiefs via the St George Illawarra Dragons.

Watson, who toured the PNG Chiefs facilities in Port Moresby over the weekend and arrived back in Australia on Monday, is understood to have a two-year deal on the table from the club.

While he is contracted at the Roosters until at least the end of 2027, the club will not hold him to the final year of his deal if he can find a better option elsewhere.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu review – helmeted hero tangles with hateful Hutts in decent feature outing

The badass bounty hunter and his little green friend take on the Empire and Jabba the Hutt’s family in this solid enough addition to the ever-expanding universe

Here is a non-canonical, or semi-canonical tale – maybe the distinction is beginning to blur – from the Star Wars universe, serving up some entertaining but very familiar Star Wars narrative tropes on a spectacular Imax scale. And if you thought it was possible to end a movie like this without a climactic aerial combat scene involving X-wing fighters, think again. It is developed from the Disney+ streaming TV series The Mandalorian and set in the timeframe just after Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, in which holdout warlords from the defeated Empire are plotting a return against the New Republic.

'The Mandalorian and Grogu' Review: Pretends to Be a 'Star Wars' Movie

Jon Favreau directs a big-budget movie with a tidy small-screen consciousness. But that might be what "Star Wars" now is.

Back when it was known simply as “Star Wars,” the movie that changed the world — and launched George Lucas’s ever-expanding universe of mythical sci-fi — seemed as born for the big screen as any movie of its era. “Star Wars” said to its fans: Here’s a swashbuckling Zen space opera of irresistible vastness — a world large enough to colonize your imagination. To do that, “Star Wars” needed to be epic, and was.

But by the time “The Mandalorian” came along, in 2019 (42 years after the original movie), the world of “Star Wars” had expanded to the point that in its very omnipresence, as well as its hyperactive digital-age busy-ness (a quality launched with “The Phantom Menace” in 1999), it felt larger than ever…and also smaller. More had become less. That’s why “The Mandalorian,” created by Jon Favreau as the “Star Wars” universe’s first live-action television series, was the perfect solution to what had become The “Star Wars” Problem.

‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Splits Critics: “Most Boring Star Wars” vs. “Best in Decades”

The official review embargo has ended and here's what critics are saying about 'The Mandalorian and Grogu.'

Critics finally have their chance to weigh in on The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The official review embargo was lifted Tuesday morning on Disney‘s first Star Wars film in seven years.

The verdict? The first batch of reviews are decidedly split on the Jon Favreau film. Several reviewers praise the Disney+ show’s big-screen debut as a fun, stand-alone adventure that benefits from Pedro Pascal’s laconic delivery as the helmeted bounty hunter, the cuteness of Grogu, and a dynamic score by composer Ludwig Göransson. The film’s snowy opening sequence — which has been shown in advance for fans at special screenings — is cited as a particular high point.

‘The Boys’ Star on [SPOILER]’s Tragic Death, Why He Can’t Watch His Final Episode and Dancing With Homelander Between Takes: ‘We Had to Keep It Light’

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for Episode 7 of “The Boys” Season 5, now streaming on Prime Video.

In a final season full of major deaths, “The Boys” killed off another main character in its penultimate episode.

Frenchie (Tomer Capone) put up one last fight against Homelander (Antony Starr) to protect his love Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) — but he was no match for the all-powerful supe. In his final moments, Frenchie and Kimiko shared a kiss, and then he succumbed to his wounds, surrounded by friends.

The episode begins with Homelander at peak power. He kills the president in the Oval Office, disbands Congress and dissolves all boundaries between church and state. He even abolishes the Seven, which prompts Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) to leave the country — but Homelander chokes him out and puts him back into cryostasis. Meanwhile, the Boys are investigating pro-Homelander propaganda films being made at Vought Studios, thanks to a tip from “Gen V” heroes Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) and Jordan Li (London Thor). Hughie (Jack Quaid) and Butcher (Karl Urban) are captured by a shape-shifter who transforms into Butcher’s old colleague Joe Kessler (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), but they’re able to kill the supe and escape.

‘The Boys’ Creator: Why That Tragic Major Character Death “Had to Happen”

Eric Kripke breaks down that major show exit in episode seven of the final season.

[This story contains a major spoiler for the ending of The Boys season five, episode six, “Through the Heavens Fall”; and major spoilers from episode seven, “The Frenchman, the Female, and the Man They Call Mother’s Milk.”]

At the end of the seventh episode of the fifth and final season of Prime Video’s action-comedy hit, Frenchie (Tomer Capone) sacrificed himself to protect his love, Kimiko Miyashiro (Karen Fukuhara) from the wrath of Homelander (Antony Starr). But Homelander zeroed in on Frenchie instead, who opened a hatch exposing himself to a fatal dose of radiation, and told the evil supe — “I bet you never danced a day in your life.”
