How super sub Liam Lawson rose to the challenge of driving this year's Red Bull

Liam Lawson saw the chequered flag in Zandvoort in seventh place, as his super sub appearence yielded a handful of points.

The Dutch GP weekend was always going to be difficult for Liam Lawson after he was parachuted into Red Bull Racing at the last minute, but the New Zealander excellently did the job that he was asked to do.

The Red Bull RB22 and Racing Bulls VCARB 03 may share the same power unit, but they are very different beasts, and heading into a busy Sprint weekend schedule with just a day in the Milton Keynes simulator with which to adapt to the former was a big challenge.

Lawson earns Red Bull praise after Zandvoort return

The New Zealander was drafted into the senior team at short notice after Isack Hadjar was ruled out with a wrist injury, giving Lawson another opportunity with Red Bull less than 18 months after his difficult two-race stint at the beginning of 2025.

Lawson made an immediate impression by qualifying eighth for Sunday’s race, reaching Q3 for the first time as a Red Bull driver and finishing just over a tenth behind Max Verstappen in seventh.

The result came despite Lawson having to rapidly adjust to an RB22 he admitted was significantly different to the Racing Bulls machinery he has driven throughout 2026.

If you think about some of the richest people in the world, the majority of them have one thing in common. Their wealth, in all its gross excess, is not just sitting in their bank account or in big dollar-sign bags in a bank vault somewhere. It’s almost all tied up in shares and other investments, which they would have to sell if they actually wanted to buy a new yacht or something.

Overlooked capital gains rule could see Labor target $372b worth of super assets

New analysis has found the Albanese government’s capital gains rule changes could target about $372 billion worth of assets, forcing superannuants to cough up an extra $55 million a year.

New analysis has found Labor's capital gains rule changes could target about $372 billion worth of assets, forcing superannuants to cough up an extra $55 million a year collectively.

Analysis by the Financial Services Council (FSC), published by The Australian, found Labor’s budget overhaul restricts how managed investment trusts can offset capital gains and losses.

This means millions of Australians with investments in this type of asset could be forced to pay more at tax time.

Super El Niño Threat Grows: Map Shows At-Risk States This Winter

A developing El Niño climate pattern is forecast to strengthen significantly during the second half of 2026, with some forecasters warning it could evolve into a rare "super" El Niño and potentially rank among the strongest events on record.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says El Niño conditions are already established in the tropical Pacific and are expected to intensify through the end of the year, while some forecast models suggest the event could rival or even exceed the strength of historic El Niño episodes.

El Niño is a natural climate pattern that occurs when sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean become warmer than average. Those warmer waters influence atmospheric circulation around the globe, altering rainfall, storm tracks and temperatures far beyond the Pacific basin.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — A strengthening El Nino has already broken records for intensity at its early stages, and it likely will spark even more wild weather worldwide as it grows, “adding fuel to a planet already on fire,” United Nations officials warned Friday.

A key area of the Pacific Ocean used to measure the strength of El Nino this week reached its warmest and most intense level ever recorded for the 15th week since it formed, which is early in its lifetime, scientists at Columbia University reported.

India’s monsoon rains in danger as UN chief warns planet is ‘on fire’

António Guterres says strengthening El Niño will help push the world’s climate crisis into ‘uncharted territory’

India’s monsoon is in danger and hotter, drier conditions are forecast across much of the world as a stronger El Niño weather system is taking hold, weather experts have warned.

António Guterres, the UN secretary general, said the strengthening El Niño was “adding fuel to a planet already on fire” and pushing the world into “uncharted territory”.

The El Niño system will strengthen from August to October, which will bring higher temperatures globally, with increasing rainfall in some regions while others suffer drought, according to data and forecasts released by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on Friday.

Top super funds made double-digit returns. Is yours among them?

Growth super funds have yielded a 44 per cent return over four years. While this golden run shouldn’t be thought of as normal, one industry leader says chances of a US tech bust are low.

Tech shares led Australian super funds to their fourth straight year of returns above 9 per cent, with the average fund returning 9.5 per cent over the past 12 months and a cumulative four-year return of 44 per cent.

Industry fund UniSuper delivered the best return of any super growth option last financial year, reporting a return of 12.3 per cent, according to the annual list produced by research house Chant West.

For many Australians, superannuation doesn't occupy their routine thoughts until they hit their 40s.

By that time, people who have been working for most of their lives may have built up hundreds of thousands of dollars in super, and start to think more closely about whether the amount they have accumulated will help support a comfortable lifestyle in retirement.

For much of the past decade, retail funds have been the biggest winners in attracting billions of Australians' super.

But in recent years, there's been a shift of retirement savings out of the major players into self-managed super funds (SMSFs).

ASIC warns savers at risk as big wealth platforms leave $300b exposed

The corporate regulator says major wealth management platforms have overly permissive compliance regimes, leaving customers exposed to the same dodgy schemes and shonky practices that led to thousands losing their savings when the $1 billion Shield and First Guardian schemes failed.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission analysis – its first of the fast-growing sector since 2024 – bluntly concluded platform operators were “not doing enough to protect members” and, in some cases, found they had even regressed on crucial consumer safeguards over the past two years.

‘Deeply concerning’: ASIC warns on gaps in oversight of $300b in super

Businesses that oversee $300 billion in superannuation savings invested via wealth platforms are not doing enough to monitor for potentially excessive financial advice fees being deducted from members’ accounts, the corporate watchdog warns.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) will on Monday say it was “overwhelmingly disappointed” after it conducted a review into how well super trustees in the platforms segment are safeguarding members’ retirement savings.

Platforms, which have surged in popularity, allow members to have greater control over their super investments than traditional funds. They are technology systems that allow investors and financial advisers to manage money spread across multiple investment options.

Super Netball semi-finals: Adelaide Thunderbirds and Melbourne Vixens battle for grand final spot

Adelaide Thunderbirds head coach Tania Obst has called a tactical timeout and told her team to connect.

“We are in control here, we’ve just got to play our processes,” she said.

The Vixens have stopped Adelaide’s goal-blitz in the third quarter with an impressive performance from Lily Graham and Kiera Austin in the super shot period.

The visors shaved the margin down to five-points with one quarter left.

The Vixens have used the Power five segment in the final three minutes of play to claw back some points and reduce the margin to eight points.

Ahead of the super shot period, the Vixens placed young Lily Graham into the game – who has missed the last three games.

Attacker Kiera Austin believes the Melbourne Vixens can defy the doubters in their grand-final qualifier against the red-hot Adelaide Thunderbirds as they aim to overcome their late-season Super Netball slump.

Last year's premiers looked primed to earn a home major semi-final after sitting atop the ladder midway through the season, but their campaign dramatically derailed and the side lost four of their last five games, relinquishing top spot to Adelaide.

The Thunderbirds host the Vixens in the major semifinal in Adelaide, before the West Coast Fever and Melbourne Mavericks meet in the minor semifinal in Perth.

Di Honey has left her third best shooter on to start the fourth quarter after that great super shot showing. It's nice to see that form rewarded but Lily Graham hasn't had a heap of court time this season, so her connection with Austin isn't as solid in live play as they'd like. Graham goes to pass to Austin but Austin wasn't expecting it and the ball goes out of court. It's a throw-in and another opportunity for the Thunderbirds. They add another to their tally and Graham heads back to the bench.

The $400k super line that could define how comfortable retirement is

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

Retirees with a superannuation balance of under $250,000 could exhaust their savings within a decade of comfortable living, something that could have particularly dire consequences for women, new research has found.

The study from the Monash Centre for Financial Studies suggested that, amid market instability and a rise in both life expectancy and living costs, many retirees were facing difficult choices.

Associate professor Ummul Ruthbah, one of the authors of Comfort or Collapse: Why Balance Size and Design, Not Just Returns, Decide Retirement, said the report's findings were "sobering".

$400,000 superannuation warning as Aussie retirees risk 'exhausting' their savings: 'No chance'

Retirees with less than $250,000 in superannuation face a "high likelihood" of running through their nest egg within a decade if they live a comfortable lifestyle, new research has revealed. Longer life expectancy, higher living costs and market volatility mean many Aussie retirees are now facing difficult choices to ensure they don't outlive their savings.

But the size of your starting balance isn't the only factor that determines retirement outcomes, new analysis by the Monash Centre for Financial Studies found. Using Capital Market Assumptions, the study found the mix of equities and bonds, and the sequence of market returns in the first years of retirement were also key factors.

A Super El Niño Is Increasingly Likely, And It Could Be Record Strong

A super El Niño is increasingly likely later this year, and it could become record strong with potential global impacts on rainfall and temperatures from summer through winter, as well as the 2026 hurricane season.

The central and eastern equatorial Pacific waters continue a steady march toward El Niño following the La Niña that was in place since last summer.

You can see this in the animation from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center below. Note the warmer than average ocean water encroaching from both the east and west near the equator while the cool anomalies have faded since the middle of February.

Seasonal models are predicting an El Nino climate pattern that could be the strongest on record, bringing with it more extreme weather.

“I think we’re going to see weather events that we’ve never seen in modern history before,” WFLA-TV Chief Meteorologist and Climate Specialist Jeff Berardelli, in Tampa, Florida, said Friday.

An El Nino event is expected to develop from the middle of this year, impacting global temperature and rainfall patterns, according to the World Meteorological Organization. While the models indicate that this may be a strong event, the WMO cautioned that the models also have a harder time making accurate forecasts in the spring.
