Oil tanker hijacked off coast of Yemen and taken towards Somalia

Somali pirates have hijacked an oil tanker off the coast of Yemen, according to multiple Somali security officials that spoke with the BBC.

The Yemeni coastguard earlier said the tanker MT Eureka had been hijacked and was headed towards Somalia. Sources said it was overrun by pirates in the Gulf of Aden, near the port of Qana.

The pirates departed a remote coastal area near the seaside town of Qandala, which sits on the Gulf of Aden, according to three separate security officials from the semi-autonomous Puntland region who spoke with the BBC.

It marks the second hijacking of an oil tanker in the area in a 10-day period, following the hijacking of Honor 25 by Somali pirates on April 22.

Fears of resurgence in Somali piracy after three vessels hijacked in a week

Pirates appear to be taking advantage of international naval strength being diverted to Middle East

Three vessels have been hijacked off the coast of Somalia in the past week, raising fears of a resurgence in piracy around the Horn of Africa, and adding to the woes of the global shipping industry.

The merchant vessel Sward was taken over on 26 April, a day after a dhow was seized. These followed the 21 April hijacking of Honour 25, a motor tanker carrying 18,000 barrels of oil, according to the Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean (MSCIO), the tracking service of the EU’s naval force.

“All incidents remain ongoing …,” the MSCIO said in a statement on Monday. “Vessels operating in the area are strongly advised to maintain heightened vigilance … particularly within 150NM [nautical miles] of the Somali coast between Mogadishu and Hafun where feasible.”

China, US war tensions ramp up as tanker remains stuck

A Chinese-linked tanker is being closely watched around the Strait of Hormuz as the US blockade risks a showdown between the world’s two biggest economies.

Tokyo | The Rich Starry, a US-sanctioned tanker linked to China, has spent most of its commission trying to avoid the spotlight.

But the ship, falsely flying a Maltese flag and carrying 250,000 barrels of methanol, was thrust into the Iran-US war this week as US President Donald Trump’s military blockade of the Strait of Hormuz escalated tensions between the United States and China.

Strait of Hormuz blockade: the complex regional realities the US ignores at its peril

After the breakdown of ceasefire talks between the United States and Iran, President Donald Trump has now ordered a blockade of the pivotal Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf.

It’s just the latest and most combustible phase of a broader regional conflict with global impacts and long, complex roots.

But while there has been copious analysis of this “coronary artery” of global oil and gas trade, much less attention has been paid to the history and sociopolitical fabric of the Hormuz region itself.

This is something of a blind spot, because understanding the deeper cultural dynamics of the strait and its surrounds can tell us something of what might now lie ahead.

LIVE UPDATES: US tanker aircraft crashes; More than 3 million Iranians displaced; Warships to escort oil supplies, says US official

Welcome to our live rolling coverage of the conflict in the Middle East, this Friday March 13.

The US Central Command says a rescue operation has been launched after the loss of a military refuelling plane in "friendly airspace" over Iraq.

A top Trump administration official says the US Navy will soon start escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.

New footage has emerged of Iran's secretive underground "missile tunnels", where the regime is suspected of keeping attack boats and weaponry away from surface attacks.

There are fears that multiple attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz could spark an oil slick ecological disaster, and whispers are growing that Israel will begin a ground operation in Lebanon.

A US military refueling aircraft crashed in western Iraq on Thursday, in an incident US Central Command said involved another aircraft but was not the result of hostile or friendly fire.

The United States has surged a large number of aircraft into the Middle East to take part in operations against Iran.

In a statement, US Central Command said it was carrying out rescue efforts after the US KC-135 refueling aircraft went down. The second aircraft landed safely.
