Gallant McDermott rescues Tasmania after retiring hurt

Rookie left-armer rattles Tassie with five-wicket burst before veteran batter overcomes 'debilitating' back spasm

A hobbled Ben McDermott retired hurt before returning to post a spirited century and rescue Tasmania against Victoria in their round two Sheffield Shield clash.

The Tasmanians crashed to 7-45 but recovered to be bowled out for 241 on day one at Bellerive Oval, with McDermott making a gallant 128.

McDermott retired hurt on six with a lower back injury but returned after lunch for a decisive 166-run stand for the eighth wicket with Jake Doran (73). The pair were the only Tasmanians to reach double-figures.

"I'm a little bit sore, my back stiffened up and I had a back spasm there early in the innings," McDermott said at stumps.

Burnie-born point guard Taran Armstrong's clutch pull-up jumper with 5.5 seconds remaining has delivered the Tasmania JackJumpers a pulsating 84-82 NBL win over Melbourne United.

After Sam Waardenburg's three-pointer with 14.2 seconds left levelled the scores at 82-82 at Hobart's MyState Bank Arena on Thursday night, the JackJumpers called a time-out before point guard Armstrong drilled the tiebreaker.

United had one last chance to pinch victory, but Malith Machar's long shot rimmed out.

JackJumpers vs United Prediction & Tips: NBL27 Round 3

Round 3 of the NBL27 season continues on Thursday night with a standalone matchup that pits the Tasmania JackJumpers against Melbourne United. The JackJumpers have been hit with a number of injuries to start their campaign and will have to be at their very best to match it with United’s star-studded roster.

Check out our JackJumpers vs United preview below and head to our NBL tips page for tips for every match this season!

The Tasmania JackJumpers return to MyState Bank Arena on Thursday night desperate to bounce back from a highly frustrating 93-87 loss to the Cairns Taipans. Dropping a game to a Cairns squad that many pundits categorise as the weakest roster in the league is a massive early-season wake-up call for Scott Roth's men. Taran Armstrong was a genuine bright spot in the defeat, putting up 20 points, seven assists, and six rebounds, while big man Will Magnay battled hard inside for 17 points and seven boards. Despite solid production from Armstrong and import David Johnson, who added 18 points and seven rebounds of his own, the JackJumpers struggled to string together consistent stops when it mattered. Leaking points to a struggling opponent is a major concern, and they now face a monumental step up in class.

Oduro, Chance, excited for first road trip

Prior to United’s first double-header of the Hungry Jack’s NBL27 season, Head Coach Jacob Chance and big-man Josh Oduro spoke on their approach to the games, specifically Thursday’s matchup against the Tasmania JackJumpers.

Chance, coming off his first win as Head Coach, is excited to leverage that momentum into a road win in Hobart.

“It's our first time jumping on a plane together and hanging out and going to dinner. Hobart's a beautiful place to visit,” Chance said.

“We're all locked in on Tassie right now on Thursday night and that's going to present its own challenges with how they play and how good they are… it'll be a good game for us.

Reaction to the sale of Tasmania's largest farm

Tasmania's peak farming body has slammed the Federal Government's decision to approve the sale of Tasmania's largest farm to a UK forestry investor.

The Government-funded Clean Energy Finance Corporation has joined forces with Gresham House and British Aviva Investors to pay $142 million for Rushy Lagoon.

Tas Farmers CEO Nathan Calman said he's extremely disappointed on behalf of the agriculture sector and north-east community.

Chalmers approves ‘disgraceful’ farm sale to foreign-owned carbon credit company

Jim Chalmers’ “disgraceful” approval of the sale of a Tasmanian cattle farm shows that for Labor "net zero trumps the protection of prime productive agricultural land", the Coalition says.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ “disgraceful” approval of a Tasmanian cattle farm to a British company receiving $69 million in public funds has been decried by the Coalition.

Labor gave the green light for the sale of the 22,000-hectare Rushy Lagoon dairy and beef farmland to Tasmanian Nature Asset Trust, which is run by the UK investment firm Gresham House.

The Albanese government’s approval followed the Foreign Investment Review Board approving the $100 million sale.

The Tasmania Devils aren't scheduled to play their first AFL game until 2028, but the fledgling club has already claimed its first scalp, lobbying successfully to block Hawthorn from playing games in Tasmania after 2027.

Hawthorn is less than pleased after being forced to cease playing home games in Tasmania ahead of the Devils' AFL entry.

The Devils' prize? Exclusive access to the northern half of Tasmania, a football heartland which the Hawks have been able to call their own since 2001, when they started playing state-sponsored fixtures at York Park.

‘Build your next dynasty’: Cairns AFL boss’ pitch to the Hawks

With Hawthorn’s looming exit from Tassie now official, one of the top contenders to be the Hawks’ next home away from home has made the case for the Northern Nest

Don't miss out on the headlines from Local Aussie Rules. Followed categories will be added to My News.

Hawthorn can build another quarter-century long dynasty in Far North Queensland and forge a lasting connection in a town ripe for the taking.

That’s the pitch from AFL Cairns general manager Craig Lees as the sweepstakes to determine the Hawks’ next home away from home in the AFL begin, following confirmation earlier this week of the club’s forced exit from Tasmania.

Give Launnie 'six games ongoing': Community reacts to Hawks announcement

News that Hawthorn will not be permitted to stay in Tasmania post-2027 has brought strong reaction from the Launceston community.

After 25 years I would have like to have seen a transitional arrangement in place where Hawthorn could have played maybe one, maybe two games here in Launceston just to maintain that continuity of the relationship.

If this had been approached properly, in my view, then I think that they [state government and council] could have changed the AFL Commission's view. The reason I say that is for 30 years we were unable to get a commitment from the AFL to have our own team. When I was premier we managed to change that, and so the AFL can be convinced if arguments are put to it appropriately.

“Give me a reason to play you”: McDonald lays it out to Bullets

Perth's problemThe Perth Wildcats find themselves in the middle of a rough patch and one that could decide whether they’ll play post-season basketball or not.

The biggest problem for the Wildcats right now is the fact that their recent losses have come after playing some exceptional basketball in the first half.

Right now this team is struggling to hold onto a lead and win in the clutch and ever since that fourth quarter against Adelaide, it looks as if they are fighting some mental demons in those moments.
