AS IT eyes a top-10 finish this season, North Melbourne gets a chance to claim its eighth win of the season when it meets Essendon on Sunday.

North Melbourne (7-7) has won seven matches for the first time since 2019 and climbed back into the top 10 while still having plenty of room for improvement after a pair of less-than-convincing victories.

The Roos did what they needed to do in a low-scoring affair with the Tigers and can now pile more misery on the Bombers after snapping a 12-game losing streak against their rivals earlier this year.

Essendon (1-13) has been left searching for positives to carry it through to the end of the year off the back of a nine-game losing streak before heading into a bye.

North Melbourne has shifted back into the top 10, trumping Essendon 10.19 (79) to 9.11 (65) on Sunday afternoon at Docklands to claim its third-straight win.

RD 16 TEAM: Three changes for Friday night

A trio of Hawks have been recalled to face the GIANTS.

Flynn Perez, Calsher Dear and Jack Dalton have been recalled to the Hawks' Round 16 side set to face the GWS GIANTS this Friday night at the MCG.

Perez returns to the lineup for his sixth game this year after being a SSP recruit in March, while Dear and Dalton earn their first opportunity at AFL level since Round 11 and Round 8, respectively.

Coming out of the side are Jarman Impey (injured), Josh Weddle (suspended) and first-year Hawk Cam Nairn (omitted).

The World Cup is finally here and after the first round of matches, all 48 teams have gotten their first taste of action in the tournament. We've also already had our share of shocks, none bigger than Spain's draw against Cabo Verde and Portugal's stumble against DR Congo, involving two of the most highly anticipated sides in the competition. Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino's United States men's national team enjoyed a dream start, impressing in their debut with a 4-1 win against Paraguay and strengthening their position ahead of their second group-stage match against Australia.

Elsewhere it's been a tournament of stars. Lionel Messi continues to age like a fine wine with an opening game hat trick for Argentina against Algeria. Right behind him are some of the world's biggest goal scorers with Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe all netting twice for England, Norway and France, respectively. As we head into game two, the picture will start to become clearer about which 32 teams will advance from the 48-team field, and which 16 teams (the last place finisher in each group plus the four worst third-place finishers) will go home.

Australia unveil swimming teams for Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacs

Australia has named a strong swimming team for next month’s Commonwealth Games, headlined by world record holders Kaylee McKeown and Cam McEvoy, along with 15 Dolphins debutants, including emerging backstroke star Henry Allan.

On the sixth and final night of Australian trials, selectors unveiled a squad of 60 swimmers — across both able-bodied (42) and para (18) programs — for the Games in Glasgow, which begin on July 24.

McKeown and McEvoy hold longcourse world records – Ariarne Titmus retired last year – while the likes of Mollie O’Callaghan, Kyle Chalmers, Zac Stubblety-Cook, Shayna Jack, Sam Short and Meg Harris are among the household names who will spearhead Australia’s campaign during six days of competition in Scotland after the Games were controversially relocated from Victoria.

Facing a changing of the guard, freestyle stars Mollie O'Callaghan and Lani Pallister will lead Australia's all-conquering squad in search of more Commonwealth Games gold.

A 42-strong team was named on Saturday night at the end of the six-day trials in Sydney, with 14 swimmers to make their senior team debut in Glasgow next month.

O'Callaghan and Pallister are primed to build on Australia's winning ways, with fellow Paris Olympic gold medallists Meg Harris and Shayna Jack completing the freestyle relay team.

HOSTING another game in Perth, North Melbourne will be desperate for an improved performance against West Coast.

North Melbourne (5-7) put on a horror show at its home away from home in Bunbury when conceding the last 19 goals of the game in a humbling defeat to the red-hot Fremantle.

The Kangaroos have now conceded seven goals or more in a quarter seven times this season and need to find a way to slow – or even stop – opposition run-ons if they are to snap their 0-6 record away from Docklands this year.

West Coast (4-9) was given a reminder of the improvements it has made this year as it was left frustrated after failing to take its chances late in the game for a heartbreaking defeat to Port Adelaide.

Melbourne has announced a double debut ahead of Saturday’s match against Essendon

JUST 16 days on from joining the AFL world, mid-season draftees Lukas Cooke and Joel Fitzgerald will make their debut against Essendon on Saturday.

Cooke’s debut comes after a dominant display in the VFL, patrolling Casey’s backline with 32 disposals, 13 intercepts and 11 marks. While Cooke has spent time playing across multiple positions, he flourished as a defender in the SANFL, averaging 18 disposals and eight marks prior to being drafted.

The tall defender arrived at Melbourne following five years building his craft playing for the Woodville-West Torrens Eagles.
