“ASOS hacked,” the alert, which was sent about 8pm AEST, reads.

“Dear ASOS DPO and IT, we have fully compromised the Snowflake instance. Engage with us, or we will leak it.”

ASOS has not made any announcements to customers as yet about the message and did not immediately respond to nine.com.au’s request for comment.

'ASOS hacked': App users receive notifications apparently sent by hackers

Asos users across the UK have been sent pop-up messages from its app that appear to have been sent by hackers trying to extort the company.

Dozens of people have told the BBC about receiving a strange message from the clothing and beauty store's app, appearing on their phone screens.

"Dear ASOS DPO and IT, we have fully compromised the Snowflake instance. Engage with us, or we will leak it," the message reads.

Asos did not immediately respond to the BBC's requests for comment.

"If confirmed, this is a deeply serious attack because the hackers appear to have done something particularly brazen: turned ASOS's own app into their ransom note," says Charlotte Wilson, head of enterprise at cyber-security firm Check Point.

Anthropic's Mythos isn't threatening bitcoin. The real AI risk is at crypto exchanges

There's a saying in crypto: not your keys, not your coins. It's typically a warning that it's safer to keep your crypto in an offline wallet that's harder to attack than an online exchange where you don't have control over the keys to the wallet housing the funds.

So far, however, the complexity of learning how to self-secure and custody crypto has been prohibitive to many prospective crypto investors, which has allowed exchanges like Coinbase and Gemini Space Station – two of the earliest in the game – to thrive.

But with money now being more digital than ever and AI getting stronger, that narrative may be flipping. AI like Anthropic's Mythos, which is built to find software vulnerabilities at extreme speed with unprecedented accuracy, could help usher a new wave of attacks on companies built on and around crypto – an industry already working to overcome a years-long reputation of hacks, scams, and exploits.

Project Glasswing: Securing critical software for the AI era

We formed Project Glasswing because of capabilities we’ve observed in a new frontier model trained by Anthropic that we believe could reshape cybersecurity. Claude Mythos2 Preview is a general-purpose, unreleased frontier model that reveals a stark fact: AI models have reached a level of coding capability where they can surpass all but the most skilled humans at finding and exploiting software vulnerabilities.

Mythos Preview has already found thousands of high-severity vulnerabilities, including some in every major operating system and web browser. Given the rate of AI progress, it will not be long before such capabilities proliferate, potentially beyond actors who are committed to deploying them safely. The fallout—for economies, public safety, and national security—could be severe. Project Glasswing is an urgent attempt to put these capabilities to work for defensive purposes.
